  • Official MS Pro/Premiere test reporting thread.

    With the help of some of the people who frequent this forum the test specification has be refined. If you have MS Pro 6.0 w/DVD Plug-In, MS Pro 6.5, or Premiere 6, please run the tests and report scores here, or e-mail them to me.

      I just finally got the time to run the test here on my computer at work.

      System:

      Dell Dimension 8100
      Intel 850 chipset
      512mb Rambus memory
      Windows 2000
      Ulead MediaStudio Pro 6.5
      Intel Pentium 4 @ 1.7gHz

      a. DV encode time: 5:56
      b. NTSC DVD time: 5:14

      I'll run the test at home on my AMD Athlon system when I get a chance.

        Looks good except for MPEG II result...

        Thanks for running the tests.

        Your MPEG II creation time seems substantially out of line with the other P4 in the results table. Are you sure you used the NTSC DVD preset? Field A and not frame? Constant bit rate 5500. Have a look at the results I've posted so far. I have a feeling you were encoding in frame mode.

          The reason my MPEG-2 encoding time was too fast was due to the fact I used the FILE>CONVERT command on the DV file that was created.

          My apologies.

          I have re-done both tests:

          1. DV encode: 5:54
          2. MPEG-2 encode: 8:12

          This time I used the FILE>CREATE command to create both the DV and the MPEG-2 files.

          (As you can see, the DV encode time is only two seconds faster than the first test that I did... so that would seem to be a consistent result.)

              I just finished my home Athlon system test.

              System:

              Elite Group K7S5A motherboard with SiS 735 chipset
              512mb of PC2100 DDR memory
              Ulead MediaStudio Pro 6.5
              Windows 2000
              AMD Athlon Thunderbird @ 1.4gHz

              a. DV encode time: 7:20
              b. NTSC DVD encode time: 8:29

              I found this result interesting.

              In the past, when I used the File>Convert command to convert the DV file into the NTSC DVD file, the Athlon actually did the conversion *more quickly.*

              This time - when using the File>Create command to create the NTSC DVD file using Terry's project file - the Athlon is not as fast as the Pentium 4.

              (But still the Athlon 1.4 was only 17 seconds slower than the Pentium 1.7)

              The Pentium 1.7 is clearly faster at DV encoding than the Athlon 1.4.

                These 1.4GHz Athelon times are much more in line with mine.
                I was beginning to think we'd found the magic app where DDR shows performance gains equal to its price premium over SDRAM.

                I'm not denigrating DDR, it is faster, but not fast enough for me to want to go out and buy new DDR and a MB to use it in, whereas if DDR really would cut the MPEG2 encoding time to half what I'm getting over SDRAM, I'd be willing to do so.
