  • i815 boards not suitable at all for video grabbing?

I read in the FAQ of the Vmagic card, that there are PCI problems on i815 chipset mainboards.

The FAQ claims they suspect this to be a PCI issue that is on all i815 boards, not just the one they tested.

    Comments?

Well, I then have to guess that Intel forgot to read those reviews - I now have 48 Intel D815EEAAL and D815EEAA boards running in combination with G400 Marvels, G450 eTVs, as well as DC10+ /DC30+ and DV500 plus cards with no complaints.

Any ideas what those problems are supposed to be?

      Vmagic

no, they just say there are PCI troubles on i815 boards, when recording. Vmagic is an MPEG2 PVR card, which can record, playback another part while recording etc, but still that should not be that big a PCI load...

They have troubles with Sis735 and Ali chipsets too, PCs sometimes have to be reset several times before they start... sounds like timing issues on the PCI bus.

THey are a new company at this, but they do seem to test a lot, and they do take into account the Athlon popularity, testing many Athlon boards. Seems to work very well on VIA chipsets.

But it did get me wondering if maybe i815 boards had PCI troubles. I do know they are slower than BX boards, but they are very nice with interrupt handling (at least some are, like the Asus boards)

Oh, they are just doing as all HW producers do:

        Blame it on the Motherboard!!
If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.

Jeremy Clarkson "806 brake horsepower..and that on that limp wrist faerie liquid the Americans call petrol, if you run it on the more explosive jungle juice we have in Europe you'd be getting 850 brake horsepower..."

          Not really

They aren't 'blaming' it on the mobo, just listing incompatibilities. This is a startup company that seems quite determined to do it right. So if they can fix it in drivers I'm sure they will.

What's good about them is that when you visit their website and look up a product, the incompatibilities list is right there on the tech info page, they don't try to hide this.

So you know about it _before_ you buy, not after...

            I have a Intel 815e chipset Gigabyte Mo/bo, 512Mb ram, P111 1Gig
            Seagate ATA100 7200 HDD x 2
            Firewire and composite capture.
And it just runs n runs, no sweat to fill drives good quality with AV_IO, no drops at all. Either format.
I'm quite impressed with my combination.
