  • I wanna upgrade a Mill. G450, but not with RR

I need some help on the sbject. I'm a really big fan of desktop video. I haven't done anything yet, but I know I am (a fan). I've got a Matrox Millenium G450. It has video out (TV out), but not video in.

They say the Rainbow Runner isn't the best choice for an upgrade.
What should I buy. The TV in (as in antenna in, not as in video in) doesn't have to be in the card nessesairily. And if it is, then it should have a remote control (a real remote control, not some software designed to look like a remote control to fool the very stupid people).

Maybe I should have bought a all-in-one card, but well... I didn't. So I need a good upgrade.

Well a G-series Rainbow Runner wouldn't help with a G450 anyway, it can only be twinned up with a G200 or G400 (millennium).

I can't think of any other top cards that can both capture (effectively) and have a tuner. For analogue capture, the Miro/Pinnacle DC30 is excellent and dropping in price (but still not cheap). You could pair this up with a TV card to give you both sets of functions, but I'm not an expert on these so I can't tell you whether they have an external remote. Alternatively you could buy a cheap VCR to act as an external tuner (and source/target video deck) which would definitely have a remote.

Hauppauge Win-TV. Get the PCI, not the USB.

Yes, the Hauppage WinTV products are an excellent choice. I personally like the WinTV Theater #495 and WinTV-Radio #401 because they have an S-Video input.

This is very handy if there's reason to capture analog from a DV cam, which can be helpful when dealing with some of DV's less helpful limitations. It's also the natural way to go if you have a Hi8 cam or SVHS deck. The G450 can handle the S-Video out.

Both also have a real live physical remote control and can record stereo.

I agree, stick with the PCI versions. Also avoid their MPEG capture card, the WinTV PVR. Video quality issues.

Do you mean to say the G450 eTV which uses MPEG, is not a good option??

I plan to use Premiere 6 for editing.

I've been thinking about getting the G450 (for using with 2 RGB monitors) the WinTV Theater looks appealing cos I wanna connect my Hi-8 Camera to it.

The original poster asked about an upgrade for his g450 non-etv. The g450etv is not an upgrade, it is a whole new card.
