I often wondered wether most of these e-mail viruses were Microsoft program specific, for auto operation??

I do NOT use MS progs for receiving, as others are more convenient for me.

Question: can macro viruses, or others, attack through an open MS Word Program running in the background, even if i do not open an attachment in my mail proggy (forte agent).

Forte agent seems to bring down the whole message which is auto displayed, but with no attachment openned as such.

Anyone got any advice please.

PS. Usually my long witterings are the kiss of death for most threads - we will just have to see (I can take it - boo hoo hoo)!

Biker, NO email viruses can spread UNLESS you manually open the attachment (unless you specifically set your email client to open attachments within the message - which would be the most foolish thing anyone could ever do).
The reason these things spread so quickly, is because there are so many twits (okay, some just don't have the computer savvy to realise they're being dumb) out there who don't take the proper precautions.
ANYONE, using ANY email program will get infected if they open this attachment and have a program that can execute Visual Basic scripts. It's not MS specific, and anyone thinking it is will get a big shock.
What is MS specific, is that it uses the contact list to email your friends.

I agree. If everyone stopped using MSIE and Outlook, half these problems would never appear. If everyone stopped using Windows, Word and Excel, then 99% of these problems would be eliminated in one fell swoop. MS are to blame for writing software which allows viruses, worms and sundry bugs to attach themselves. Those guys using Solaris and Linux are larfing their heads off because their OSs are inherently less likely to be attacked (although I've little doubt that some clever hackers will find cracks in the armour, if it is worthwhile). Viruses have been round long enough for MS to have incorporated security in all their software: the fact that they have not is probably voluntary: a) it costs time and money to fireproof software and that would reduce profits; b) there is a downside in that security takes time and all flavours of Windows are already far too slow; c) who cares about the users?

Cou;dn't MS just release a patch that would prevent VB script from auromated mailing from a contact list. Who uses that feature anyways?

Not so long ago, the subscribers of a certain mailing list (those using Outlook) learned the hard way, that the virus can also be included in the message body.

The virus was called KAK, a script virus that activated it self when the message was read (there were no attachments).

In those cases it's a good thing to have a virus scaner that can scan emails befor they get to the email client!

On the other way no Computer virus is as bad as the virus from the movie "Virus"
