  • Need tips on not losing visual quality while using morgan/matrox MJPGEG codecs.

WE have one computer with a G400_TV in it and we are capturing with it and then sending the files to other computers to be ediied in premiere. because these machinces don't have a G-400 we are using the morgan codec. by the time the whole process in over and the files are back on the main machine to be outputed to tape, the quality is not too great., can someone please give me some advice on the best way to do this.

    Thanks,
    -Cheez

If we use AV_IO to capture using a morgan codec and only use the G400 codec from the final decompression, will we get better results?

Any time you re-encode, you lose quality. I would continue to capture with the Matrox codec. I would then research the batch processing capabilities and try to make "sub-clips" with the Morgan codec for editing on the other machines. I would then create the final show using the original clips (Matrox MJPEG) on the G400 machine with the project from the other machines. You may need to do some minor trimming and such, but the final output should be very high quality. This is obviously going to require considerable disc space, but for the capability to edit on the other machines and get the highest quality, this is the only alternative that I see.

Tip: if you are using the Morgan codec and quality is a concern, be sure to select 'fancy upsampling' and don't use fast integer.
