  • DV and 48 Khz Sound

Please can somebody tell me if I need to upgrade my sound card.

I want to switch from analog to digital video capture but I understand that DV uses 48 KHz sound rather than 44.1

I currently use an AWE64 which I believe only supports up to 44.1 KHz sound. Does this mean I need to upgrade it to a SoundBlaster Live or something?

    Thanks.

You don't actually need a sound card to do DV as the sound is in the DV stream. You only need a sound card for playback on your PC. DV has two sound formats 12bit 32Khz sample and 16 bit 48Khz samples.

I don't use my sound card (SB 16pnp) as I play the audio and video from the camcorder into a TV monitor. If I am generating a DV output I just record it back to the camcorder (either TR7000e or PC7e) otherwise I usually render to MPEG 1 or 2 depending on what I am doing - this causes the sound to be re-sampled (usually 44.1 Khz) and my sound card is a happy bunny with this.

Yes, I guess I could just re-render. I need to do this anyway because my camcorder doesn't have DV-in.

What I'm planning to do initially is to do a DV capture and then render to MJPEG and output using my Marvel.

ScottV: don't worry about it, as you can play back the clips with 48khz in Windows with your AWE64 without any trouble. I have one in my system, too. Apparently, the windows drivers handle any necessary downconversion on playback in real time.

The only trouble you'd ever have with 48khz would be attempting to record some audio through the inputs of the AWE64 at 48khz. Then you'd get some pretty lousy sounding .wav files for sure!

As far as doing analog captures that DO need the sound card, you can capture at 32khz instead of 48khz.

          Hi there,

Actually, up until recently, I was using an AWE64 in my system as well, and I didn't check it out yet (I put the card in a computer I built for my parents... hey... THEY didn't need digital output! ), but I do believe I was able to record into 48 KHz without any problem. I know I certainly usually USED 44.1, but I'm pretty certain the AWE supported the higher rate.

Try using a better program than any sort of Windows recorder and see if you can't choose the higher rate for recording. And then see what it sounds like, I guess. =)

I do believe I did recording at that level when I was using the AWE64. I tell you what... I think that particular card more or less hit the golden age of sound on the ISA bus... I loved that thing...

Hope this helps, I'll give it a try myself sometime,
          Matt

            Thanks guys.

I'll let you know how I get on when my PyroDV arrives. £74, wow, what a bargain.

            Thankyou LynxDV and happy birthday.

It depends on wich AWE64 you have!
The Gold version has 48khz suport but not the Value or standard!

This is true. I have an AWE64 gold and it displays 48k as an option. Works great with the RT-2000.
