  • MJPEG and win2k

    Hi,
I know that there are a _lot_ of threads discussing this topic, but I have some further questions.
-I managed to get MJPEG capture working with G200+RR-G, but what is the way to enable YUY2 capture just as in win98? I saw FD made a patch for win2k also, but couldn't found a link to that file. :/
-Is there a way to display MJPEG files on the TVOut just as they're displayed in win98(perfect quality and colors, no jerky palyback)? In win2k I can enable TVOut(desktop shows), but when I play an MJPEG movie it's played on the desktop. In win98 the MJPEG playback somehow "takes over" the win desktop and shows in perfect quality from "wall-to-wall" size, but not under win2k. I could say it's like playing MPG movies in win98.

Now I have two not that important, but maybe interesting(at least for me) questions...
-Does anyone know why Linux drivers for Zoran based MJPEG exist and why they don't under win2k?
-Am I right that other cards -based on same Zoran chip- allow 720x576 capturing? Then why is Matrox stuck to 704x576?
    Thanx in advance,
    Chris

I own a G400 so I can't answer all of the G200 questions, but as far as the Linux/Win2k drivers there is an issue wiht the Zoran cip and creating good WDM (Win2k) drivers vs. VFW drivers that Win9x supports. It is a different (I don't think newer) method and apparently no one including Pinnacle can get it right. Zoran was bought out by someone else and we all know how that goes...

The zoran source code is public domain I guess and I believe that may be where the Linux drivers came from originally. Different OS that I have never tried so I can't be too sure how it acts with HW or multimedia stuff. Maybe better, maybe worse, all that I know is that most of your stuff is written for Windoze, like editors, encoders, everything.

The 704 vs 720 was answered to me once before and it was a logical reason, I just can't remember why. I know that it would be nice for DVD authoring to have 720*480 as well (NTSC).

From a personal standpoint, I used Win2k for about 6 months and it was quite nice, except for the fact that none of my HW seemed to have good drivers for them. I did manage to get everything working, but Win98Se was just much, much netter for everything. When I say everything, I mean everything.

WinXP is not even in the near future. Too much new HW to buy and I just spent a few hours playing with it at my brother's house. It is the ugliest thing that I have ever seen and none of the SW that I tried to load for him worked (mp3 stuff). That damn start menu got to me really fast. It just looked too cartoony for me and it did crash several times. Not very impressed since it came from HP and was bundled with it.

I guess that my point is that until someone gets off of their duff and makes a good card, i.e. good 3D, analog capture using HW MJPEG, and DVDMax, and WinXP compatible, I will stick with Win98SE and the Marvel. Of course no one in their right mind would mess wih HW capture now a days and Matrox is dropping their low end capture market completely. I guess that with DV and firewire they feel that the market is gone. The ATI AIW 8500Dv is the only thing that comes close, but has no DVDMax function.

      Hi,
Thanx for the reply. So it seems that I have to stick with win98 if I wanna use everything I have(DVD module and HQ TVOutput of MJPEG files). It's bad, because I found win2k much more stable and even faster than win98 when editing videos. Not counting that there's the possibility to use 4GB+ AVI's on an NTFS partition, which can be a handy feature(you don't need it too often, but when you do it's vital).
BTW, isn't it so that VFW AVI's can't be bigger than 2GB? Just because as I reckon I managed to capture a 4GB MJPEG AVI with VirtualDub. It stopped at 4GB, because a FAT32 partition cannot have 4GB+ files. The second part of that AVI was played perfectly.

Today I installed WMP 7.1 in the W2K partition, and I couldn't start enymore Video Tools. It said something that an other program uses the Video Capture. Sure the d***n Micro$oft M Player 7.1.
The combination of VT 2.04 (Leaked) + WMP7.01 works fine in Win98, but not in W2K. Before I used the much better MP 6.2 in W2K.
Lucky me, I've Ghosted my W2K for only a couple of days ago, and now I'm back with the old trusty MP 6.2 and all the working video tools.
The choice for me, could be Win98 for any video work.
But W2K is faster and the VT 2.04 + PD 5.39 works with HW MJPEG, disregarding the above failure. And I need W2K for an other program, anyway.
W2K is running a bit safer. Or, are there any safe M$ OS?

Answer to running tools under Win2K

I solved problem with running tools under Win2k, Like you I was deviled with the error saying that another programme had commandered video card. I noted that the error didn't occur when I ran tools logged in as an adminstrator so now I use the RUNAS feature to use tools when logged in as another person, ie, I have a link to tools with the RUNAS option selected.

A pain but it works, me thinks a registry permission error is causing the problem.
