  • Best pagefile size for W2K?

    What's the best pagefile size for a W2K SP2 running on a 512MB machine?

According to some tweaker articles, 256-512 is more than enough for a system with half a GB of memory, but W2K defaults to 1,5 x 512MB. Quite a difference.

Will be using the system for capture with MPEG2 card and G400/HuffYUV, and editing with MS6. Nothing much else is running on this system.

    Hi Neko,

With 512MB of RAM, you probably won't be using the pagefile much at all, unless you have a scanner, and you like to scan in full page magazine pictures at 600 DPI.

The only way to know for sure how big your pagefile needs to be is to use your computer for awhile with the performance monitor or task manager displaying your memory usage to find out how much you are really using.

If you just want a simple answer to your question, you probably won't go wrong if you set your page file to a minimum of 256 MB and a maximum of 512 MB.

If you ever use more than 256 MB, you will see a pop-up message warning you that you are running low on virtual storage and that Windows is expanding the pagefile for you. If you see this happen a lot, then you probably need to make your minimum size a bit larger.

When I set it to low W2k did'nt shutdown properly, but that might have been fixed in one of the sp's

        Thanks!

Thanks for the tips guys. I have more questions on W2K with Matrox card, please have a look at that thread too if you have the time. Thanks!

I leave the Win2K swapfile to its own devices. It handles resources a ton better than Win9x/ME ever did, and so is far less in need of this kind of tweaking.

            thanks Doc

            Thanks Doc!

I kept it at the standard value (plenty of HD space anyway) but did fix the size so it doesn't get adapted dynamically.
