  • Advice on Hardware Purchase Please

I am looking to buy a video editing kit for home use -- mostly editing home videos. I have a G400 (32MB OEM), PIII-450, 128 RAM, 13GB drive, and a Sony DCR-TRV315 NTSC digital camcorder.

I know a natural choice is a Matrox RR board, but I don't know that much (yet) about what I need for decent video editing, and if the RR is the best choice -- actually I've been having a little difficulty finding it in the local electronics shops. I did see a kit made by Dazzle that looked pretty good ($250 US). I liked the external connection box because it's kind of a pain to access the back of my computer on a regular basis; it seems to come with similar (to RR) software by Ulead, but as far as specifications...I don't know.

Does anyone have any other recommendations, or reasons why I should stick with the Matrox RR?
My rig: P4 3.0GHz; Asus P4C800E; 1GB DDR 3200; AIW Radeon 9800 Pro; WD 120GB SATA; Plextor DVD burner; Liteon DVD reader; Audigy 2ZS; Logitech Z560 4.1; NEC FE991SB

Kid's rig: AMD XP 1600+; 512MB ram; GF4 Ti4600; Maxtor 60GB; Plextor CD burner; Sony DVD reader; SB Live; Cambridge 4.1 speakers; NEC FE991SB

    Other kid's rig: Athlon 2700+; ASUS A7N8X mobo; 512MB PC3200 ram; GF4 Ti4600; Maxtor 80GB; SB Live; Cambridge 2.1; NEC FE991SB; Liteon DVD-ROM

Since you already have a video camera with an IEEE-1394 interface then I'd suggest you consider the ADS Pyro Pro. It comes with the full version of MediaStudio Pro6.0 and a LOT of other very nice software:

Pixelans SpiceMaster Lite w/50 Spices (I love this one)
Boris FX 4.0 Ltd. (special effects)
Hash Animation Master 2000 3-D character creation and animation
Acid Style 2.0 loop based music editor (great)
Sound Forge XP 4.5 audio editor

    VideoGuys has the Pyro Pro for $399;

IF you get the Pyro Pro just make sure you get the recent DV patch for MediaStudio Pro and apply it.

I would also suggest an upgrade to Win98SE if you haven't already as it has some enhancements for using IEEE-1394 not present in Win98. Win95 is not an option.

      Hi

I also recommend the ADS Pyro Pro, the problem I have is that I don't have enough time in the day to learn all the options.

Animation Master has a lot of potential for Animation over your footage. MS Pro 6 is brilliant.

I bought mine in the UK at a very helpful firm http://www.lynxdv.com/jp.html who have excellent tech support, they actually use what they sell.

      Good Luck
