  • Any freeware to shrink a large Quicktime MOV file?

    Greetings all,
I used to be quite actiive here until I got rid of my Marvel G200 a while ago so I don't know how active things have been. I come to you with a somewhat simple question. I have a Quicktime file, encoded from an Avid system using the Sorenson codec, that is much too large to email to a friend of mine (50+ MB). I tried to shrink it down using a copy of Media Cleaner Pro on a system here at work, but for whatever reason the resulting file have no video at all (I admit I didn't know what I was doing).

Unfortuantely the render took so long that I had to give up that machine after only one try. What I need to know is, can anyone refer me to a demo or freeware app that will let me reencode this file at a lower rate? I'd like to shave away at least half the file size and I cannot export it again from the Avid until Wednesday, since it takes almost an hout to export the 5 minute program.

Ideas, suggestions and/or links would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    NotEd

I don´t really know the answer to your question, but I´m curious about why your file won´t play back properly, provided the sorenson codec is installed on the playback system. You could also try to render your project to mpeg 1 or 2, which will result in a considerably smaller file, or to an AVI, which is widely accepted by 3rd party and freeware apps. Or maybe you rendered to Quicktime for a specific purpose. In that case you could try Bink & Smacker on www.radgametools.com. It´s the only freeware app. that I know that is capable of converting a .mov file. Hope this helps.

I always convert QuickTimes to MPEG, Avi or "whatever" using AviSynth and the QTReader vfp plugin.

You can only do the video this way, but you can save the wav file out from QuickTime player and dub this back into the script.

If you are interested in this method, I can post a sample script.

I ended up installing ABC Videoroll. It allowed me to import the file then rerender it back out. In the end I got it down to around 9MB.
