  • Upgrading to AMD Athlon XP2000+

...I'ved decided to upgrade my Athlon Thunderbird 1.4gHz processor to the Athlon XP 2000+.

I'll run Terry's speed test after I install the new chip.

    It should be interesting.

I'm using an Enermax 465P-VE power supply, which is 431 watt unit.

Have you spotted any tech docs indicating this is enough for the XP2000+?

I plan tomorrow, but I need to know if my power supply is up to snuff.

I'm sad now as I just ordered an XP1800

I am hoping it's a tad faster than my trusty but aging Celeron 700

        I'm also going with a Matrox 550

Also a Sonic Fury (UK speak for a Santa Cruz).

Have I been influenced by someone????????

My ADS Pyro is staying though

        Regards

        John

          AMD certified PS's...

Tech doc (pdf) on XP cpu's...

XP 2000+ Max power 70 watts (non OC'd)
Tbird 1.4gHz requires a max of 72.1 watts (non OC'd)

The question you ask has one major problem, it depends on what all else you system is comprised of to need such power. Overrating it of course is one option.

P.S. My OC'd Athlon500@850 requires 85.4 watts and works just fine with a Powerman 300watt supply. This system comprises of two IBM 7200rpm IDE HD's, a burner, a DVD drive, dual nics, SBLive (ack), WinTV PCI, G550 and a half gig of ram.
