  • Matrox RT 2500 and DVD-R

Has anybody have experienced capturing a tape via the RT 2500 MPEG -2 1bpp and then straight to a authoring program then to a DVD-R. I want to know how the resultant DVD-R via a pioneer AO3 from the RT 2500 hardware encoder stacks up. Good, Excellant, or so so. I already know what to expect from a very good tape via my present Rainbow Runner MJPEG to encoded via Tmgne and or Lingos MSP 6.0.2 encoder. Is the RT 2500 hardware equal to or better than software encoding.

My experience with the RT2500 has actually been very good. I have captured via S-Video straight to MPEG 4:2:2 AVI+wav combo. Supposibly, you can import that straight into other software programs, but I have not found one that lets you trim clips easily. Generally, here's what I do to get a MPG file capable of authoring:

    1. Use Adobe Premiere to capture straight to MPEG IBP Direct
    2. Use Matrox File Conversion and convert the file to a MPG file.
    3. Use Ulead VideoStudio 6.0 to trim the file and then author to a CD.

Of course, there might be another option coming soon with Uleads DVD Workshop, it mentions that it will allow you to trim clips, so that might even be a better deal.

I take it then it that taking the tape straight into the DVD-R is possible and make a good DVD. If you going to trim your clips you should have be using the option of taking in the clip not via MJPG 2 1pp but straight MJPG. I think you can do that with the RT 2500.

I tried using MPEG I-frame before, but it takes even longer to convert the clip then to MPEG IBP. It's easier to capture it in Ulead, convert to MPG and then edit with SmartRendering with Videostudio 6.
