YUY?

Hello,

I wonder, what is YUY or YUY2? What is it good for?

Will Matrox next-gen. marvel use an mpeg2 hardware codec, instead of an mjpeg?

YUY and YUY2 are virtually the same thing. Putting it very basically they are the fourCC labels for two types of YUV uncompressed video streams.

What's fourCC? YUV? Go to http://www.webartz.com/fourcc/index.htm and do some reading ;-))

Since they are uncompressed they can be very useful for short compositing and special effects sequences. This reduces artifacting significantly over adding effects to a compressed video stream. Note I said short. These files are huge with full frame YUY2 running about 1.2 gigs/minute. Once all the F/X are done the sequence can be added to the rest of the project.

Actually the use of software codecs is on the rise. Hardware codecs were faster up until recently, but with the new hyper-fast processors & drives software codecs can be just as effective as hardware. Witness DivX/MPEG-4 and PICVideo MJPeg.

My bet is you'll see more and more software codec capture cards for systems over 400mhz, mainly based on streaming YUY to the codec. A major advantage to them will instant upgradability of the codec.

Which codec? MPEG-4 and PICVideo MJPeg are real possibilities, as is the new MPEG-2 realtime softcodec from Medio Systems:

They also make a DV softcodec.

If MVision (and DVision, their DV codec) turn out to be the real deal the hardware codec makers might be loosing some major sleep.
