  • red, yellow,& white colors look weird in mpegs??

hi- im new to this board, but have been to the vcdhelp forum for quite some time now.
i'm having some problems with my mpeg files converted from the matrox g400 marvel produced avi files.
the original avi file has no problems with colors, but once i convert it to mpeg, the colors look weird. only red, yellow and white colors have this problem. the colors turn greenish.??!
its getting annoying, and its affecting the quality quite a bit. (having a blinding green color doesn't look good at all).
does anyone have any idea on how to fix this?
i tried re-encoding the avi file, and converting to mpeg again, and the problem is gone. but this takes up a lot of time, and also a loss of quality.
any help would be useful. thanks!!!

Strange. Is this MPEG being played on a DVD deck as a VCD/SVCD etc. or in MediaPlayer?

The only color shifting I've ever seen coming out of either has been with DV files encoded with older versions of the Microsoft DV codec, and that was to green.

just being played on the computer.
theres nothing wrong with the mpeg files. but something with the avi files. when i put the avi files in any editing program, u can see the weird colors also. viewing the avi files, there's no weird colors. maybe something wrong with the video tools or drivers?? im just using pc vcr to capture.

Even stranger. I'd probably reinstall DirectX then uninstall and reinstall the display and capture drivers in that order.

i installed the latest directx drivers, display drivers and video tools.
but the same thing happens. i even tried older display drivers and video tools. tried different capture programs such as avi_io, virtual dub, mgi video wave. same thing happens to all converted mpeg files.
finally captured from the composites instead of the s video out. seems that the colors are less glaring when i did this. but they are still there. i then switched to my samsung vcr, which i only use for pal tapes (works for ntsc also). and you know what???? the colors are gone!?!?!?
-_-;; so i dont know, something is wrong with my svhs mitsubishi vcr.

I had some similar problems with a RRG. Long MJPG AVI files seemed to have glitches that caused colour problems. Everything from false colours to the entire AVI turing green.

I never determined the cause of the problem other than a suspicion that the RR was slightly dodgy.

The only solution I found was to use the Morgan MJPG codec for decompression (not capture) as it seemed to be able to cope with the problems in the AVI file.

                Cheers,

                David.
