  • Firewire - Feature maybe Flaw

I have a Panasonic AG-EZ20-UP digital camcorder. Never listed as compatible with any hardware/software. Doesn't respond the best to Firewire commands but it has one undocumented feature. This feature may be true on all Firewire equipt camcorders I don't know.

The feature is this. When the camcorder is docked to the base which allows analog out and 5pin edit connections, it works as a digital to analog converter without running tape. I export from MSP to the camcorder as if I were to record to it, I have a VHS VCR hooked to the normal analog out and presto I get a clean analog signal that I record on the VCR. I discovered this by accident.

Firewire apparently puts some strain on the camcorder mechnanism. Mine was just dropped off for repair. The reverse shuttle function generates an error messages. I am sure this is from too many rewind past BOT generated by Firewire.

Anyway a helpful hint I will utilize a lot when I get my unit back.

Unfortunately not all Firewire implementations are equal so problems do crop up from model to model.

As for the video passthrough, this is getting more common although it's not totally universal. Nice feature, but I'd like to see cheaper DV decks that editing software will *totally support* (most doesn't now) so we don't have to wear out our cams using them as edit decks.
