  • Why I'm Lobbying for DVD-R/DVD-RAM At Work

Literally scores of digital photographs we've shot are on multiple CDs, which represent a significant investment in time and effort.

These are high resolution digital photos so there's no way I can fit them on one CD disc.

DVD would be nice because just about all of our photos could be recorded to just one convenient DVD-RAM disc.

DVD-RAM is a format I'm growing to appreciate...

This morning I had a scare.

One of my bare CD discs was dirty and could not be read by my drive.

Yes - it was the one disc I absolutely had to have to prepare a PowerPoint presentation.

Fortunately, a damp cloth removed the grime and the disc could then be read.

But I'm noting scratches on many of these bare CD discs and wondering just how much longer they'll last.

With DVD-RAM, the cartridge protects the bare disc and - this morning especially - that seems like an important advantage.

though DVD-RAM can't be played back in stand-alone players, unlike DVD-R and DVD+RW

Right, but the DVD-RAM/DVD-R drive I have at home is the best of both worlds.

DVD-R for video playback on stand alone players.

DVD-RAM for secure storage of data such as digital photographs for computer retrieval.
