One cheap way is to get Uleads Cool3D 3.0. I use it all the time.

It has several keyframeable explosion effects. These explosions can be applied to *.x format 3D objects, 2D/3D fonts, 2D objects and 3D objects cretated within Cool3D 3.0 itself.

An example of an animated .gif explosion can bee seen on this page:

    http://www.webutilities.com/communit...als/c3d_p8.htm

These effects can not only be created as animated .gif's but as full frame high quality video as well. Video can be rendered either *.avi or *.mov files using any installed codec or no compression at all.

At Uleads store it runs $80 boxed, $60 downloadable, but you can probably get it cheaper at other online sources.

If you want the whole scene to explode you could also look into the VizFx package. It is an excellent plugin that allows all kinds of effects, some rendered in OpenGL, from color changes to explosions and black hole effects.

VizFx runs $80 at the Vizone store, but it came bundled on the MSPro 5.2 update disk so....

I don't think there is a trial version, but I can tell you it's very good. I believe the downloadable version runs cheaper than the $80 I quoted; $60.
