What does the rest of the system look like? What version of the video tools are you using? What capture settings?

AVI_IO is almost never the cause of drops unless it's misconfigured.

      Hi Doc

Trust you can now see my system profile.

I am using the latest drivers from Matrox. I have tried all possible combinations of capture in avi io. I have no drops in MSP 6.

Do you have the drops when capturing in any resolution or are you trying to capture full frames? Your rig could be just too slow for capturing full res video. Which codec do you use?

          Capturing 352x288. Matrox vidcap driver.

Anything above 12.5 frames per second produces drops

IIRC there was a version of the 98se vidcap (one of the ones that had YUY2 disabled) that had hideous frame drop problems. Which version are you using?

Not sure that I understand the question. How do I determine the vidcap driver version. There was no YUY2 function available so I downloaded the utility from Matrox YUY2 is now available and the results are the same ??

If I remember right it was VT 1.54. 1.52 seemed to be the best for YUY2, but he is capturing using the HW. Those knid of drops lead me to believe that something with his his system is foul. Even with a 200MMX and an Ultra 33 HD it shouldn't drop frames like that. That was the whole point of HW compression. Make sure that you are not compressing audi on the fly. Use only PCM audio. As a matter of fact try a capture without audio, just video. If there is a resource problem, it is usually there. Make sure you have no IRQ's shared either.

My sound card is a Phillips Seismic Edge. Tried capturing video only.

                  No Drops!!

Audio format is PCM. avio does not support any other format.

So the problem exists somewhere in the sound card or the Matrox BOB.

I have no drops with MSP 6

                  Curious??

Not familiar with that audio card, but this is often see with cards that have a high CPU/PCI utilization.

This issue is one of the main reasons the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz audio card is becoming popular: it uses VERY little in the way of system resources.

It's not going to be a problem with the break out box. If you have audio, then it is working. The BOB doesn't compress your audio.

As Doc said, the SC thing is a very common issue (that is why I brought it up) and that is why the happy people here use TB Santa Cruz. The remainder of the planet seems to be fighting issues with their's. SB cards are notorious for sucking PCI resources and there are some (ok, almost none) others that do not have the low overhead that the TB has. You could try moving it to another PCI slot, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Some MBs share resources among the different slots, it is just a matter of finding a happy place for all of them. Make sure that you have any DOS or SB16 legacy crap disabled to.

Another thing is if this is not a recent install (i.e. you upgraded teh SC witout formatting) there could be some residual stuff from your old SC. Try using Regclean (free) to get rid of anything in the registry from your old card.

Last but not least make sure that you have the latest drivers installed.

I tried a Philips Rhythmic Edge soundcard (the current model PSC703--not the older PSC702) in my system. In win98 using VT1.52 it crashed the system every 2nd or 3rd capture attempt. In winME it didn't crash but wouldn't capture audio every 2nd or 3rd attempt. Swapped it with a "crappy" old SB16 ISA and problems vanished. Back to Bestbuy went the Philips (200 mile drive!! ) (One Way!!).

Never tried it with AVIIO, but I'm guessing you might be experiencing something similar. Try swapping out that soundcard with something different. I'm Gonna get the Santa Cruz just as soon as I can scrape together enough change from my couch.

I had a sb pci128 decided to go to a sb live. Bad move. Decided to go Phillips. Bad move.

Looks like a move back to sb 16. I can't find a TB here in OZ.
