  • PowerDVD question

I got PowerDVD bundled with my Pioneer burner. It doesn't seem to like MPEG-1 or -2 files generated from Marvel at 704 x 576 and burned at 352 x 288 (VCD), 480 x 576 (SVCD) or 704 x 576 (DVD) with Ulead DVD plug-in/Movie Factory. Am I doing something stupid?

I tried asking the maker thru' the Internet but they won't accept e-mails and their web site form doesn't work for me (it says I use a forbidden character, without saying what or where and I can't trace it).

Can you play other mpeg files from your hard drive with PowerDVD?

It has a hard to describe button to switch from disk mode to file mode which then lets you open a selection box.

I don't remember specifics of the Pioneer bundled version I tried back in October, but newer PowerDVD versions do drag and drop of VCD, SVCD and mpeg2 files.

I agree that PowerDVD has one of the absolute worst user
interfaces I have ever seen. But once you have it installed,
you should be able to play your MPEG2 and MPEG1 clips
      through Windows Media Player.

        Thanks for your input.

I think I may have put my finger on the problem. I have temporarily a prehistoric PCI Millennium II Graphics card in the same computer as the DVD burner and, if I understand things correctly, this cannot be set up to display DVD formats. When I had the old m/b with the AGP Marvel, there was no problem under W98SE. With this set-up there are similar problems with both W98SE and W2k. I should be getting a new AGP-4x card shortly that may hopefully solve the difficulty.

The queer thing is that the home-brew MPEG-2 DVD files play OK in Media Player from the hard drive but not from the VCDs/DVDs.

          Hi Brian

As regards to your problem, what does your DVD look like on a stand-alone DVD player??

I haven't actually tried a DVD on the stand alone yet. I burnt a DVD-RW to try it, but the player did not accept the disc type (others have reported that the player accepts only DVD-R and I haven't yet finalised a project ready to risk the expense of burning a DVD-R). However, it accepts the VCDs, SVCDs and XSVCDs without problems and excellent quality. I did try a mini-DVD: the video was superb but the audio was non-existent.
