  • Add codecs to win2000?

    How do i add a new codec to win2000? I am a long time RRS and premiere user. I now use a pyro and premiere using the adaptec dvsoft codec and VideoStudio 4.0 to capture and switch from DV type 1 and 2. Now I thought going from 98 to 2000 would be easy(finally get that BP6 and dual 366(O/C to 550) celerons to burn some rubber) but the adaptec dvsoft codec isn't supported under win2000, even though it supports both win98 and NT4 AAAAGGHHH!!! I have recently found a dv codec from mainconcept and want to install it but how. Its not like win98, please help! I can capture in VideoStudio using the microsoft dv codec. I can choose dv type 1 or 2, but premiere does not list this codec and will not except the files.

    How can I capture and use uncompressed video? Do I need a special capture program? And will premiere accept it?
    Thanks in advance for any help I recieve

    I can offer a little advice on codecs under win2k:

    First, you can get to list of installed codecs:

    Right click 'My Computer', select Manage, select Device Manager, select Sound Video Controllers, select Video Codecs, select Properties ... there's the list.

    Note that if you remove a codec it appears to re-appear. You have to also remove the FourCC from the registry (just do a search on the entry listed that you want to remove).

    The only codec I have had problems with under Win2K is Morgan-MJPEG. I suspect it is to do with the FourCC reg entry, but I started to use PicVideo anyway.

    One other way to install a codec is via 'install new hardware' and point the installer to the .inf file. Or, right-click on the .inf and select 'install'.

    Also I had a problem with my MP3 codec ... it didn't show up in Audiograbber1.62 until I set it's priority to 1 on its properties.

    HTH!!!

      Hi!

      Both Adaptec and Mainconcept codecs work in w2k (but not together, of cause).

      To install, right-click on .inf file provided and select Install...

        The DVsoft codec will not install.I right click on the ini file, choose install, it appears to make a quick process but it doesn't list under the installed codecs. The mainconcepts codec installed and is listed under installed codecs, but neither VideoStudio or Premiere list it as being available. help.

          I think it depends what version of mainconcept you are trying to use:

          The one that comes with mainactor is an 'internal' codec -- can only be accessed by mainactor and not premiere etc.

          mainconcept do a standalone version, maybe you should use the trial version first to make sure it's okay.

          This whole DVcodec thing is one thing that puts me off DV ... much prefer MPEG2, at least there's ISO standards...

          (I do wanna get a DVcam someday though, anyone recommend the canon XM1 or know if it sux?)

            Hmm...

            1. You should have administrator rights to install codec.

            2. Open regedit and check the following values in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32

            For DVSoft:
            "vidc.dvsd"="Dvc.dll"

            For MainConcept:
            "vidc.dvsd"="mcdvd_32.dll"

            That's the only place in w2k responsable for VfW codec registration.

            All files should be in System32 folder. If not - you should include path to them in those keys.

            If you don't include description for those DLLs in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers.desc
            they will be listed by DLL name in Control Panel->Sounds And multimedia->Hardware->Video Codecs->Properties.
            (This isn't required for proper codec operations)

            P.S. DV Codec, included with MainActor is evaluation version. It is not registered during MA install. You can do it manually via registry as I described here.
