  • First 'DVD Multi' Drive...

...looks like mass June shipments are starting in Germany:

This new GMA-4020B 'DVD Multi' drive is from a collaboration between Hitachi and LG.

    It burns to DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-R and CD-RW.

Pity I don't speak German. But it's a step in the rite direction. I personally preferred on paper the + camp but the market I think is deciding. Heres hoping that this may be the start of some form of standard.

Now that is just too darn cool.

COOL isn't the word. Can't wait for other manufacturers to come out with similar products so the prices drop...

Toshiba has a decent - wrt. compatibility - dvd-rom drive (SDM-1612). Ok, it is just a reader, but the fact that it can both read DVD-RAM and DVD-RW make it worth mentioning:

          It is capable of
          DVD: DVD-ROM (DVD-5, DVD-9, DVD-10, DVD-18), DVD-R (read), DVD-RW, DVD-RAM
          CD: CD-DA, CD+(E)G, CD-MIDI, CD-TEXT, CD-ROM, CD-ROM XA, CD-I Bridge (Photo-CD, Video CD), CD-I, Multisession CD (Photo- CD, CD-Extra, CD-RW, CD-R), CD-R (read), CD-RW (read)

Its performance does drop slightly with DVD-RAM.
