  • Terratec vs Rainbow and Marvel

Finally I got my Terratec Cinergy 400 TV capture card

    Supported resolutions under PAL
    160x120
    240x180
    320x240
    352x288
    480x360
    480x576
    640x240
    640x480
    704x576
    704x288
    720x576
    720x288

    Default internal compression is YUY2
    optional YUV9 and several RGB

Output compression can be any example: HUFF or Picvideo or Divx 5.0
    , mpeg2 or mpeg 1

Installation under WIN 2k went without problems.
NB Terratec is using WDM drivers hence virtualdub and AV_IO
will not work under WIN 2k without a wrapper(did not test win98). The Terratec
capture utiility do not support segmented AVI, however there is no file size limit if using NTFS. (I captured a 6 GB avi yesterday and imported it under premiere without any problems.) However, it is possible to buy 3 part such as iuvcr which supports seggmented
    avi.

I did a small test capture of a tape from toronto, (buildings, people and niagra falls)

    Test 1
    ---------
    Win 98
    PIII 600
    Matrox Marvel G200

Captured SVHS 704x576 from Hi8 using Virtualdub, YUY2 and picvideo compressor with quality settings 19.

    Test 2
    --------
    Win 2K Service pack 2 , direct x 8.1
    PIII600
    Terratec cinergy 400
Capured svhs 720x576 from hi8 using terratec videotool, YUY2 and picvideo compressor with quality settings 19.

Played test 1 and test 2 both on computer and my old
    commodore pal monitor.

It is hard to see any resolution differences, sometimes the
terratec seams a little better. Only way to find out is to run a new test where camcorder is pointing at a non moving object. Default colour and brightness settings on terratec also gave a slightly better result. However
I did not adjust the Matrox g200 settings. I guess matrox gives the same result if tweeking a little.

All in all its hard to see any differences. Except that I finally have
a capture card costing 60 US$ which runs under win 2k and XP
    without problems.

I guess I will find something to complain about later. However, so far so good.

    Regards

Recently I came across this card too. For only 65 euro it almost looks too cheap to be any good. So It's nice to hear that the capture quality is good. Do you by any chance now how the capture quality is in comparrison to a Hauppage WinTV card (the price is almost double that of the Terratec)?

The specs on the web site are kind of limited (even the German version). Can you tell me whether it has it's own audio input, or that you have to use your sound card for that. Does dat cause any sync problems?

Does it come with a program that can do time shifting?

Is there any documentation on an API, so you can write your own software to control the tuner/teletext or use the remote?

    Thanx,

    Eddy.

      Hi

There is one audio input (sterio) and one audio output (sterio). Audio out is connected to audio IN on sound card.

(There is an audio capture device on board. It is possible to select terratec cinergy audo capture or use a 3 part card such as soundblaster before capturing)

Onborad chip is Phillips SAA 7134 and not the bt chip which is
currently used in Hauappauge. I have found no spec on this chip. I doupt there will be any huge
quality issues between hauppauge and terratec. Personally I selected terratec because the card is designed for win 2000/xp
without having to install lots of 3 part drivers and turn overlay on of in order of beeing able to capture full frames or divx on the fly.

I have not found any sync problems yet between audio and video.
Actually I never had any problem with marvel either. I guess the problem is often related to the audio card and or the pci bus.
      Maybe I am wrong :-)

Included with the terratec there is an application for real time
mpeg-2 encodin. Have not tried it yet.

There are no api documentation. Best thing to do is to get the phhilips spec.

      More later

      Regards

It seems it has all the features of the Hauppage WinTV (and some more). While searching for the chip, I found this card: http://www.pcwelt.de/news/hardware/22675/3.html
Does it look like it, or did Terratec create their own card?

        Any new experiences?

        Eddy.

Perhaps same chip but different card.

you might give them a call, the Cinergy TV card has only recently been released and is not widely available even in germany up to now (I'm searching for one but the bigger shops where I live don't have them only some mail-order shops).

I also found this page for other possibilities to get Terratec products in the US:

                    where to buy

i see a couple of places there, i'll try to call one and see. If you find any american places to buy it on line let me know, this card looks really good for its price tag and its just what i need to help me save the extra cash for the parhelia. If anyone one else knows a place online that has it let me know. Thanks

PAL composite and SVHS is directly supported without tuner.
Card sold in USA will support NTSC

                          To Crow8k3a

Go to Products then on the left choose Display Products and the TV400 appears on the left - looks nice - until you get to the bottom then you find they don't have a UK version!

As said you probably just have to wait a bit. The card is not even really available yet in volumes in Germany and this even though Terratec is a german manufacturer.
