Finally I got my Terratec Cinergy 400 TV capture card
Supported resolutions under PAL
160x120
240x180
320x240
352x288
480x360
480x576
640x240
640x480
704x576
704x288
720x576
720x288
Default internal compression is YUY2
optional YUV9 and several RGB
Output compression can be any example: HUFF or Picvideo or Divx 5.0
, mpeg2 or mpeg 1
Installation under WIN 2k went without problems.
NB Terratec is using WDM drivers hence virtualdub and AV_IO
will not work under WIN 2k without a wrapper(did not test win98). The Terratec
capture utiility do not support segmented AVI, however there is no file size limit if using NTFS. (I captured a 6 GB avi yesterday and imported it under premiere without any problems.) However, it is possible to buy 3 part such as iuvcr which supports seggmented
avi.
I did a small test capture of a tape from toronto, (buildings, people and niagra falls)
Test 1
---------
Win 98
PIII 600
Matrox Marvel G200
Captured SVHS 704x576 from Hi8 using Virtualdub, YUY2 and picvideo compressor with quality settings 19.
Test 2
--------
Win 2K Service pack 2 , direct x 8.1
PIII600
Terratec cinergy 400
Capured svhs 720x576 from hi8 using terratec videotool, YUY2 and picvideo compressor with quality settings 19.
Played test 1 and test 2 both on computer and my old
commodore pal monitor.
It is hard to see any resolution differences, sometimes the
terratec seams a little better. Only way to find out is to run a new test where camcorder is pointing at a non moving object. Default colour and brightness settings on terratec also gave a slightly better result. However
I did not adjust the Matrox g200 settings. I guess matrox gives the same result if tweeking a little.
All in all its hard to see any differences. Except that I finally have
a capture card costing 60 US$ which runs under win 2k and XP
without problems.
I guess I will find something to complain about later. However, so far so good.
Regards
Reggie
