new capture card - which one to buy ???

I am helping a friend setting up a new system, and i was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for the capture card. Should he go for mjpeg hardware cards (g400 marvel, pinnacle dc10+ ?) or software based codec cards ?

Hey there! I don't know as much as these guys do here, but i can tell you from my experince alone (Using a WinTV card, ATI 128 and now a Marvel G400-tv), that you should go w/ a hardware codec. Much faster, and a much cleaner picture!!! I love my Marvel so much! It was the single greatest upgrade to my video editing setup!

How about if your goal is mpeg. Are the mpeg`s converted from the marvel (avi`s) better quality than if you record directly to mpeg with an ati all in wonder 128 pro( the top model ???).

Go to the VCD List http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-an...pic=Video%20CD and check out the archived posts. You'll find a bunch of folks who use the AIW and the Marvel, and compare their opinions/problems yourself. I for one was encouraged that I'd bought a Marvel
