  • Avid Cinema 1.5 w/ Matrox Marvel G400

I just upgraded today from an ATI 128 to the Matrox Marvel G400. Here's my problem. When i bought the ATI, I also bought Avid Cinema version 1.5. Well, the Matrox comes with a special edition that ONLY suppors it's own card. No other version of Avid Cinema supports the Marvel. Well the Marvel came w/ version 1.0 with Quick Time 3.02. The newer version only supports 4.0, has more transition effects and doesn't support the marvel. Well unfortuneatly, I can't open any of the projects that i have on my computer which i had made using Avid Version 1.5. This really makes me mad. Does anyone know of a way that i can use Avid Cinema 1.5 w/ the Marvel? Or make Avid 1.0 have all the extra cool transition effects as 1.5 and support 1.5's files?
    Thanks for all your help!

I have been a Avid Cinema 1.0 user in the past. It came with my Marvel G200. Mine only works with QT 3.02. It is sad that there is no backward compatibility between projects done with that so called WebPak 1.5 that you purchased and the older version that came with Marvel. I have defended Avid Cinema here on several occasions but I do think it was wrong of them to even release the 1.5 version when they knew the program itself had no future. Anyway, I am almost certain you won't be able to use 1.5 with your Marvel or somehow upgrade your 1.0. It might be worth submitting a question to AVID on their site at: http://www.avid.com/products/avidcinema/
They also have a phone number there. Good Luck.

I also asked Avid when I bought the Marvel if the two would be compatible and got a "No". I didn't pursue the matter any further and opted for MSP. It is unfortunate, but I truly do believe that MSP kicks the crap out opf Avid Cinema. I know that may be no consolation since you already bought ver1.5, and another purchase is not the answer you are looking for. Sorry.

You really need to take this up with Avid. If you can't get any satisfaction out of them, then I'd agree that MSP (any version) is a much more able product, although at the expense of a more difficult to master interface. If you want to retain ease-of-use, then I can recommend VideoStudio4 which retains a similar style to AvidCinema with more bells and whistles (If you are in the UK then you can read my 3 part tutorial published in Computer Video mag)and which can also handle DV footage for forward compatibility. It's also very reasonably priced.

Chris, I've been poking around in a forum at http://www.computervideo.net/ and see a link to Computer Video Magazine but none of the bullets are active links. I see that you did say UK but what would I need to do to read your tutorial in the US.? I did see a "subscribe" button. Can I subscribe and view the tutorial online or is it a print magazine subscription?

                Hi DChip,

Hmm, all the buttons seem to be working today. Still, the good news is that you can subscribe from Stateside as follows :

In Canada: please call Express Mag on (514) 374 9811 with your credit card details. Or fax (514) 374 9684, or write to: Express Mag, 4011 Boulevard Robert, Montreal, Quebec, H1Z 4H6.

Silent Echoes, thanks. We've helped a lot of people grow up through video editing, and they in turn help even more people. Mainly this is a big happy family, although occassionally things can get a bit heated

(Hey Bongo, did I get "occassionally" right ? :P )

Thanks Chris. I got to the magazine page itself and saw the list of "regulars" and thought those were links. Maybe it's just a list. Anyway, I might subscribe and check out an issue or two.
