Re: other studies of DVD compatibility

No, I don't know of any other major, "official" studies done on DVD compatibility. (I would consider a cover story from one of the big DV mags "official.")

What I have read, on several separate forums, mailing lists and USENET, is the Real World, "in the field" accounts of professionals and semi-pros who have been doing this stuff for a lot longer than I have. Even among this group there is no concrete concensus (which in itself says something about the state of technology/industry), but several key points emerge:

--burning at 1x is a good thing (seems proven in the DV article)
--newer players are a lot more compatibile (ibid)
--Pioneer media is most reliable (disputed in DV article)
--Apple used to be rebranded Pioneer and is now something else (not mentioned in the DV article)
--authoring is almost as important as the media (irrevelant to the DV article--maybe--since they used what they claim to be a properly authored disc image)

As always but particularly with DVD-[wildcard], Your Mileage May Vary.
