You're right, Paul.

I just tried a PREVIEW as you explained and it *did* Smart Render!

And then - as you said - the red and green horizontal lines appeared... AFTER THE FACT!

That's odd.

It's definitely different than the way .avi files work in the Ulead timeline.

Now I wonder if the FILE>CREATE process Smart Renders in the same way.

The Ulead timeline works with MPEGs much in the same way that it does with Canopus Video-for-Windows .avis.

Very, very interesting.

If one drops an MPEG into Va and then drops a second clip into Vb and then if one PREVIEWS... smart render works... and then the green and red lines appear above both clips.

If one adds a third clip and overlaps it slightly with clip #2, then the green and red lines disappear above clip #2 and do not appear over clip #3 until another PREVIEW is executed.

Wow. That is weird. It's almost like - as with the Canopus - the audio needs to be re-rendered each time.
