  • DirectX problem

    Hi All,

I've just installed directx 8.1 on Win89 SE and now big .mpg files will not play well.
The movie plays at what appears to be a faster rate with poor sound quality.
I am on Marvel G400 - TV and Creative Audigy audio card.
I have made an image of the drive before inatalling dx 8.1 with dx 8 and going back to this everything is ok.
Anybody with the same problem ?

    Regards,

    Debbie

    Win89 is sooo outdated

Check to see what Directshow filter you are using for PB of the MPEG file in question. Just do the good old properties, advanced thingy during PB. I am guessing that it is probably Ligos, it gave me similar problems in the past. Installing or reinstalling DVD SW may fix it up by registering it's own Directshow filter.

      Hi Sciascia,

Thanks for the tip. The reason I use Win98 SE is that it is small and can be imaged to fit on a CD.
I also have Win 2000 and XP but I still fancy Win98, call me what you will !!

I still have the same problem with all three versions and with all windows media players. WinDVD appears to give me the best results with dx 8.1 installed.

      What DVD SW ??

      Rgards,

      Debbie

Sorry, I was being a smart alec about your spelling Win89, Win98 is fine for most things. It was a rather weak attempt at humor. As for the actual problem there are issues with different Directshow filters for MPEG playback, these are very similar to codecs for avi's. The difference between codecs with avi's is that they are completley differnt formats, usually not compatible with eachother. MPEG Directshow filters are usually copliant with eachother, since the standard is not the filter, but rather the MPEG spec. The only difference really is that some filters have better algorythms and look and perform better than others. This is where the question I had comes into play. Ligos is the most common DS Filter for Windows, but has been known to cause playback issues on some machines, namely some of mine. By checking which filter you are using we can determine if that is the likely problem, another common problem is an audio filter and video filter from different companies. That really causes some problems.

It basically comes down to your machine, it's SW and how it feels like behaving. Different filters act differetnly than others and some can even be combined to work well. I used to use Intervideo video filters and Cinemaster audio filters. Worked great, but now I really like Raviscent and it works better with my HW and SW. It really just depends.
