  • Win 2K NTFS capture problem

Not really a capture problem but I can't get my disk space back after I'm finished with the capture files. I have a 300GB NTFS partition and I can capture happily for 15hours using huffy (although VirtualDub seems to be lmited to loading 8 hours at a time) and do all my processing. When I delete the files, free disk space is not recovered and the disk is shown as almost full. This has happened 3 times now and required a reformat each time. I tried emptying Norton recycle bin and can't think of anything else.
    Anyone have similar problems?

    Windows 2000 SP2
    Marvel 400
    512MB RAM
    Abit KR7A-RAIID
    2 160GB Maxtor 5400rpm ATA-133 drives in RAID-0

PS: Anyone have a definitive answer as to what the limit is for FAT32? Can I get away with a 300GB FAT32 partition? TIA.

    WOW! 300GB Partition, Thats cool.

I dont know about why you cannot get your drive space back. But I do know that FAT32 cannot support a partition larger than 32GB and File sizes larger than 4GB.

I havent used RAID before, but if you have 2 160GB drives in RAID 0 isn't your total disk space equal the size of the smallest drive. I am just wondering how you are getting your 300GB file size with out using a Spanned volume on a Dynamic disk configuration.

Lose (un-install) Norton and see if the problem goes away.

        Not quite so...

As we all know the 4GB single file size is a limit of FAT32, but it's only Win2K/XP that won't format a FAT32 partition larger than 32GB.

Using Win98/ME you can format a FAT32 partition from 512MB up to 2TB - Win2K/XP can still access (read and write) to this partition, you just can't create it in the first place!

This is M$'s way of moving (forcing) people over to NTFS, which isn't a bad thing if you ask me...

Actually RAID0 (striping) is the combined size of all your drives in that array. RAID1 (mirror) is the one that limits you to the size of your smallest drive.

I am guessing that it may be the Norton thingy. I really do not like the way ot manages the Recycle Bin. I had stuff that I tried to delete permanently and then it would still show up in the advanced thng. Can't remember since I got fed up with it and removed it. I believe hat if I want ot delete something, I want it gone! Not sitting around, just in case. If I screw up then too bad, I screw up, I'll live, having it keep files that I don't want may cause problems.
