  • !!! Pinnacle Systems Studio DV vs Marvel G400 !!!

    Hi !

Maybe I’m stupid to ask this, but I’m hoping I will get some information from the readers of this forum…who I think can help me out on this = )

Well, currently I’m a proud owner of a Matrox Marvel G400 graphic card…some time ago I bought a MiniDV camcorder and now I’m in need of a video-capture-card that supports DV in and out…which my Marvel card doesn’t. I have spotted a card from Pinnacle Systems, called Studio DV. This card seems fairly decent, for the pretty lame price tag (between 72-150$). Ok, now for my questions:

Is it possible for me to find a retailer in the US that supports international orders ? I want to buy the card from an American company due to the money I will save (I live in Sweden and the price over here, for this card, is up towards the 370$ level).

Can I use the card with the 25 frame/sec standard that we use here in Europe, I mean the card is made for the American market…which uses the 30 frame/sec standard.

Any other pointers are more that welcome.

Please help me out on this, I’m yet to be disappointed on this forum…so I’m counting on you guys = )

    Thanks.

    Cc

A plain-Jane IEEE-1394 device doesn't care if you're transferring PAL or NTSC over it. What matters is that the editing software is compatable with your video standard and that your camera matches it.

That said international orders often carry $50 to $150 shipping charges so I don't know how much you'll really save in the transaction.

    If you want to pursue it the Videoguys are a reputable dealer on this side of the pond and they take international orders. Check with them at;

It's not so simple with Studio DV...

Pinnacle Systems is one of the companies, which has office in Europe and they sell "separate" PAL vesion. US version "can not" work with PAL. (Due to some "wrong" registry entries ).

      This is just FYI.

        Thanks guys, for your help.

According to Pinnacle Systems it is not possible to buy the card from the US, and then use it here in Europe/Sweden.

I guess you dgcom were right, and Dr Mordrid was not ; )

        Thanks.

          CC,

I can recommend using an ADS Pyro for DV capture alongside a Marvel, since I am using exactly this setup here in the UK. The cost varies depending on the software package you opt for, but I would certainly go for VS4 as minimum.

            Chris,

Does the Pyro work with Premiere?

I use Premiere at school and I need to get a DV solution for my home machine that works with Premiere too. I've had the Pinnacle DV200 suggested but the price tag is getting up there.

              Hi Guys.

I have now cancelled my plans on buying the Studio DV from Pinnacle Systems. Yesterday I bought the Pyro Digital Video from ADS. This little card seems to work GREAT, I haven't had the time to do any deeper testing yet...but so far nothing has gone straight to...HELL. Everything has in fact gone very smoothly, the installation, the capturing, the editing, the recording back to miniDV and so forth. I can recommend anybody to buy this card...and it's REALLY sheep to !

And for Eric B (and Rakim) I can only tell you this: USE ULEAD MEDIA STUDIO 6 PRO INSTEAD. Premiere...SUCKS. At least I think so, I haven't had anything BUT problems with that software.

              See Ya.

The pyro has problems with premiere. Premiere is video for windows type 2 AVI based. The pyro DV is type 1 AVI.

Investigating the "workarounds" first might be helpful if you need premiere.

Here's a bit I lifted from the ADS tech forum over at WUG

                Quote:

I moved the following files in Premiere's Directory:

                - Acodec.dll

                - Dvavi.dll

                - Wnpapi32.dll

                - Dvoutput.dll

                - Dvc.dll

                - Dvcodec.dll

                - Dvsoft.dll

                - Fwcall.dll

                - qtcompat.dll

and now I can use DVCap to capture, Premiere to and edit, then VideoStudio to put it back to tape !

You probably have DVcodec.dll in the Windows\System folder, I have MGI Videowave II on my set up
as well & I moved DVcodec.dll to the MGI folder and both programmes now work together OK.

The advice in the MS Pro 6 VE READ ME is to remove it all together.

I know it's not exactly the same as your problem but it may give you a clue.

                  Hi Christopher,

I've not tried Premiere with the Pyro - the latest copy of Prem that I have is a 5.1C that came with the DC30 that I tested at the beginning of the year, so it will likely be too old for DV manipulation (Doc maybe can advise here).

I'd certainly be looking into the matters that Wally raised.

Premiere 5.1C is the current version of Premiere. Without drivers from the board maker Premiere is said not to work too well with TI OHCI IEEE-1394 devices.
