  • MPEG-2 Acqusition on RT.X100

I had a question about the RT.X100. Let's say you wanted to capture from an analog source a clip in MPEG-2 IBP in realtime off the X100. Then if I wanted to cut portions out of it (like commercials) and then burn the final file onto DVD, can I do that? It seems that that would not be possible as the X100 cannot edit the IBP captured file. Any ideas on how I could do this in realtime or the most efficient way possible otherwise? tHanks

There are a number of MPEG2 editors from Womble, Vitec etc that will allow you to cut parts out of IBP streams.

From what I hear however, the streams produced by the Rx100 are not DVD spec compliant, so some authoring programmes or DVD players may not like the MPEGs you get with Matrox.

The best way to do it, is to capture in DV format, edit your project, then use the realtime export to disk function to create your final IBP.
Yes it'll take some time to do it, but at least the end result is what you want.

if i capture in dv, edit and then encode to IBP, won't that degrade quality because i'm going from analog to dv then to ibp?

Not as much as you would think. The quality is actually quite good because of how the RT.X100 processes the video, though not as good as using the non-realtime (but hardware accelerated) MediaExport encoder (Ligos GoMotion Pro) or the non-accelerated Premiere 6.5 MainConcept encoder.

The MC encoder is the one with the most settings, having every setting including the kitchen sink, and as such can deliver the highest quality....especially with problem sources.

The MediaExport option has fewer options, but still has enough for most users. It also does batch exports of MPEG-1/MPEG-2/ VCD/ SVCD/DVD, Real and Windows Media. Just set up as many export templates as you need, press OK and go chase the wife around the house

The realtime encoder is for DVD only using up to 10 mb/s and CBR/VBR, but has no other options (motion compensation etc.)

Yes; with Premiere 6.5 you have no less than three MPEG export options, all using different encoders so if one doesn't handle your particular source....
