I'm not joking about the .44 mag carbine, especially with custom hot loads you could never use in the pistols. It's been one of the best brush guns I've ever owned, especially when it comes to its ability to go through heavy brush & small trees and still deliver a fast kill.

Of course not too many modern guns can beat the brushbusting abilities of a .50 or larger black powder rifle. Those things are evil.

As evil as those 50+ cal Civil War era rifles were (still are!), the story goes, if one asked Civil War doctors about casualities, the conclusion was that bayonettes had little effect in battle. But if you asked grave diggers, the conclusion would be that rifles did little damage.

The Ruger carbine is a great little gun, all the ergonomics of the M1 carbine with a good bit more power. If you load your 44 mag that hot, sounds like you were the guy the .450 Marlin was designed for. Between the .45-70 and .458 Winchester mag in power, in a compact lever action package. The muzzle is magnaported to keep recoil tolerable.

Glad my Elura arrived so I could lay off of this thread and play with the new toy. It's off-season for hunting gear but this thread has been creating some REAL temptation. That 450 Marlin is still waiting for me.

The Elura is fantastic. Incredible video. Outdoor pictures in sunlight or white clouds is awesome. Indoors, under bright GE Soft Whites the video quality is still remarkable. Low-light pictures are decent but lack detail. When I pay careful attention to what I am seeing on the little LCD, I am able to find decent shooting angles in almost any light that would otherwise be suitable for reading.

I am glad I did my homework regarding image stablization. The digital zoom on this camera runs to only 48x. Normally one needs to avoid even breathing to get good pictures with the zoom stretched out that much while the camera is hand-held. Not with this unit. The optical image stablization enabled me to get great long range pictures too. The auto-focus is super-fast and very accurate. I think my other hobby (see most of this thread) also contributed to getting those good zoomed pictures but the Canon image stabilizer definately made the steadying effort payoff.

I don't have firewire capture capability yet so I'm using the S-video in on my TV to see the Elura footage at its best. S-video in through the BOB on my G200TV does not look as good. There are some fat and very noticable horizontal lines flashing in the video and it's not nearly as bright. I will remedy this with DV Raptor or Edit DV system very soon. I am thinking that perhaps my G200 will have to be retired also if I am to get the most from DV. Was hoping to avoid that but I knew going into the DV world that there might be some issues with the G200's abilities. Also, I believe there are some documented issues with the G200 and Canopus DV Raptor??

Not all is perfect with the Elura. I was aware of the internal microphones audio capture shortcomings before buying the camera. The videographer can be heard quite clear but the subjects sound like they're way across a big room, even if they are within just a few feet. The Elura's 16 bit audio setting helps some but a more powerful directional mic will be the only solution. My docking unit is enroute and I am anxious to get an external mic. Doc, hopefully your friend is back from the muskie tournament with all fingers intact, holding a wad of fishing cash and ready to share the name of the mic he is using with his Elura. BTW, thanks again for the your comments previously that helped keeped the Elura on my short list. Glad I got it.

(sorry for the mile-long post. just juiced about the new camera)
