    Also, the +R / +RW standards are unlikely to become the mainstream at the expense of the official recordable DVD formats. DVD-R and DVD-RW will also always have cheaper media for a start.
    Why will DVD-R always have cheaper media?

        I would never, ever, ever use hard drives for storage of critical data.

        Two IBM drives, purchased by myself earlier this year, were among the many IBM drives that have failed this year.

        While I am not part of any class action against IBM, I am aware of a Web page located here:



        ...that alleges major problems with drives by that manufacturer.

        In addition, just about every computer enthusiast has stories of a particular brand of hard drive that has failed in one way or another.

        So hard drives - so easily damaged by abrupt handling - are not my personal choice for archiving data/video.

        I'll stick to DVD-RAM, which was specifically designed for that purpose.
