  • best MPEG2

    Hi Y'all,

I'm working now, and need some help from you video-gurus! I need to know what is the BEST AND FASTEST way to get a 8mm video tape into MPEG2. Money is not a problem (company pays for that), so tell me the best! Thank you so much!

p.s. for all you MURC old timers, you've probably forgotten me! =)

    Hi Ethan,

Would we forget you ? I don't know about "best", I think that "affordable" MPEG2 encoders are still fairly rare. You might like to look at the Miro/Pinnacle Amber, but as it is not a cheap card I haven't seen very much comment on it.

Argh! THE IDIOT remembers me! =P Definately not an idiot! (and Chris, you remembered my real name...)

I'm in college now (UC San Diego, California), mostly stopped using my Marvel G200 & MS5, since time didn't allow. This summer I'm working in a video company (www.yesvideo.com), and I'm to build new computers to convert 8mm->MPEG2. Specs are dual P3 800+mhz & Win 2k! =) Wow! It's gonna be burning fast!

I took a look at the Dazzle DVC2 and Vitec DCM DVD Cut Machine, which both convert video input -> MPEG2. Any suggestions or other recommendations? Fine, maybe we can't find anything affordable, but anything that works? =)

I can't seem to find the Amber you mentioned, Chris. It's not here :

      http://www.miro.com/frameset.asp?state=Professional

p.s. I see my video showcase files are still there! =)

Turns out the Amber is from Canopus http://www.videoguys.com/amber.htm . It costs $3000. Wow. The others

        Dazzle DVC2 : www.videoguys.com/dazzle.html ($300)

        Cut Machine : http://www.videoguys.com/dcm.html ($750)

If the Dazzle DVC2 can do realtime MPEG2, I don't see why $300 Dazzle can satisfy me over a $3000 Amber. Of course the Amber is more professional, but I don't see the big difference. MPEG2 *is* MPEG2, right?

          Hi Yeast,

Yep, you picked me up on that one ! Sure it isn't cheap, I can't tell you whether it is the best solution or not. Bear in mind that MPEG2 editing might well be a bitch, with none of the major packages supporting it yet.

I'd suggest listing appropriate suppliers and getting hands-on sessions with all of the devices to make sure that they can cope with all of your own demands. You may find (as with other low end solutions that crop up here from time to time) that capture isn't the problem, but editing and output might not be up to your own specs.

          Good luck !

(And of course I remember, I wondered where you'd got to !)

            Yo Chris,
I'll be majoring in Computer Science, but I'm planning to minor in ICAM (Interdisciplinary Computing in the Arts), which will deal with, hopfully, some NLE. Maybe then I'll post some of my work up for all to see. =P

            Later,
            Yeastman

                Pytkin,
That's a rad page! =) Thanks! Most of them are high-end stuff, too bad they don't have comparisons with new products like the Dazzle USB DVC2....would have liked to know where the quality stood.
