I have been trying to copy VHS rcording from satellite to DVD. DEspite trying every conceivable field order setting the only way I found that works is to capture the video deinterlaced and render the mpeg2 as frame based. This seems to play fine on my stand alone DVD player. I don't have this problem tranferring VHS that was sourced from PAL terrestial television, I can keep everything in field order B. I think it's to do with the way the Satellite footage (US based, originally NTSC) has been converted to PAL; I can think of no other reason. If i don't capture deinterlaced there is terrible jerking on movement.

I'm using a Marvel G200 to capture from old VHS tapes, and I met the same problem you describe, producing SVCD at 480x576 resolution (intended to mantain the interlaced fields).
I was lost in a nightmare because setting F.O. B or F.O. A in the encoding process, no difference at all.
So, which Tool did you use to perform the 'deinterlace' process, and what about the result on a TV screen (smooth move or ghost effect, during fast scene movement) ?

I'm using freevcr to capture deinterlaced to the Picvideo codec with a Marvel G400. Vidtools 1.52 with the Flying Dutchmans's YUY2 utility. But: I also have a Marvel G200 and I can't get it to work. The G200 won't work with vidtools 1.52 so I can't apply the YUY2 patch so I can't use Picvideo so I can't capture deintelaced: arrrrrrr.

With suitable material it's often possible to zoom in (in say Virtual Dub) and deduce the field order just be examining the contents on consecutive lines.
It might also help to separate the fields using AVISynth, view each field in isolation, and step through field by field.
It may give you some clues as to what is wrong.
