  • Rainbow Runner Studio Petition

    Hi,

I have noticed on many different forums, from Matrox, to SysOpt to Murc - that an amazing number of people have Rainbow Runner Studio, and would like to have Windows XP drivers.

I could copy/paste the many links with posts/replies regarding this subject, but the simple fact is - Matrox can and should make the drivers.

I am asking everyone who has a RRS to post in, and if we have enough people in one list, may be Matrox will realize that we would like them to do so.

I started NLE on RRS, I now have RT 2000 - hey, I love Matrox's products, I am a consumer.

Everyone has a different reason, mine is that I want to give RRS to my kid nephew, to get him started on NLE and maybe, he will also become a Matrox consumer in the very near future.

If Matrox's decision not to make the drivers is based on a marketing strategy, I think they are wrong.

They will have many more computers with their product, RRS, still running - and to me that's good business sense in the long run.

Things are tough south of the equator, I live in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and I paid close to USD 400 (including tax and shipping) when RRS first came out.

So this product means a lot to me, and hopefully to enough people out there.

Sorry to be pessimistic, but RRS is, de facto, obsolete, as are RRG and Marvel. I honestly cannot see Matrox developing new drivers for anything so many years old. The W2k driver fiasco for Marvel G-200/400 illustrates that there are technical difficulties that would make it uneconomical to do such a development.

I scrapped Marvel many months ago. for a much cheaper, simpler and more reliable system.

If you want your nephew to use your RRS, install W98SE on his computer (dual-booting?).

      Don't hold your breath waiting

Ronaldo, as much as I'd love to see the RRS able to be used to it's full potential in a Win2k/XP environment, there's probably a better chance of Saddam Hussein being elected as president of the States. I have to agree with Brian on this one. Matrox couldn't care less about the relatively few people who would like Win2k/XP drivers for the RRS. And despite what Nicram stated in this thread Here, I doubt that any backyard mechanic is going to develop these drivers either.
So I will try made version that will support MJPEG. After first look I think this can be simple, becouse drivers are "already prepared" for that, but... I don't know why, matrox don't finish adding this.
Apparently it's a little tougher than he anticipated.

As Brian has already suggested, you have the option of creating a dual boot system. It's actually pretty easy to do and it works well.

This is why these open forums are great, you exchange valuable information.

Brian, you said you scrapped Marvel for a more reliable system. Which one?

Patrick, I guess Nicram did down play the task at hand.

I just finished up grading my kid nephew's computer to XP, and he's stoked with it, I guess dual boot would turn him off.

So I give in, and I'm open for suggestions on a cheap, reliable XP compatible NLE system.

        Thanks for your help.

I'd suggest Pinnacle Studio DV 7. Yes, Studio DV V8 is now out, but it has a few bugs yet to be dealt with. Studio 7 should be available at low price now that V8 has been released. Studio V8 has built in DVD/CD authoring, but I don't like it. If you wish to burn video to CD or DVD, a reliable, inexpensive combination would be Studio 7 and Ulead DVD MovieFactory.

The most important fact to consider is that I am (and I'm sure Brian was also) referring to digital capture from a MiniDV or D8 camcorder. Analog capture has gone the way of the dinosaur (or of the RRS ).

            Patrick,

I agree, digital capture is the way to go. I've had RT 2000 since it came out.

As for Pinnacle 7, will definately check it out.

            Thanks

You ask, you will get. I use DV for digital and a Canopus ADVC-100 for converting analogue to DV (and vice versa). It is so simple and inexpensive and the quality is good (a converted DV analogue out from my camera to DV is almost imperceptibly poorer than the same DV tape played on my pro DVCAM deck). It's like Columbus' egg, because you have all the advantages of DV for editing analogue, not to mention that you can indiscriminately mix digital and analogue sources during NLE without re-rendering one of them. See http://www.canopus.com/US/products/a...m_advc-100.asp

                Ronaldo,
sorry that's life, forget the RRS or use it on a win98 machine (still got mine on a win98 system). The best way to go on is digital. I'm using a cheap ADS pyro card (firewire) and my new sony TRV50 to make A/D or D/A conversions.

                  Brian, thanks for the info.

As I said in the begining, RRS is (hopefully) going to my kid nephew, to get him started on NLE.

I have RT 2000, and couldn't agree with you more on the DV issue, it's the only way to go.

mits - I guess my best bet is to revert his computer form XP to Win 98, which I was trying not to do.

                  Thanks guys,

After many months of hair pulling trying to get my rr-g working (even using a dual boot) - there were too many issues. I just gave up and got the matrox rtx.10 (pricey -yes but the bundled software alone was the same price as the card). MAN WHAT A DIFFERRENCE- video editing is painless now- I just couldn't beleive it was this easy.
Give up on thr rr and try something else!
Yeah, well I'm gonna build my own lunar space lander! With blackjack aaaaannd Hookers! Actually, forget the space lander, and the blackjack. Ahhhh forget the whole thing!

I have a Marvel G200 still, but I'm using win98 and there is a very low chance I'll get any newer windows, since I'm dual booting with Linux and enjoying it. I've heard a couple good things about watching tv and capturing in Linux, but for the life of me I can't get xawtv to compile, so I haven't tried it yet. Maybe if the kinks get worked out somehow your RRG will get some new life on a Linux box.
