  • KT400, Has VIA fixed the PCI bandwidth issues?

I was just wondering if anyone here had dared try a new VIA KT400 based motherboard? The PCI bandwidth problems of VIA chipsets have been well documented in this forum but I note that one of the features of the KT400 is an upgraded of the V-Link connection between north and south bridges from 266MB/s to 533MB/s. So perhaps VIA has made some effort to address the PCI problems. Of course even the 266MB/s link would have been adequate if done properly so there is no guarantee that doubling the speed has actually fixed anything.

    Cheers,

    David.

    No, they haven't.

Add to that SiS has a new 963 southbridge takes the link to 1 GB/s and the KT-400 looks pretty lame.

The SiS 746/963 combo will likely first appear in MSI's new MS-6717 before too long.

A fellow who billed himself as a professional NLE system builder (Canopus systems) repeatedly claimed the Via boards worked with Canopus cards.

He moved from Vancouver, Washington to Hollywood, California and I think he's still building systems.

For quite a long time, I believed him when he claimed the bandwidth issues relative to Via chipsets had been fixed.

      But now...

      ...I'm so doubtful...

...based on ONGOING reports from users...

...that I would personally never risk the money to test a Via board.

I'm quite satisfied with both of my NVIDIA NForce 420 boards.

      They work as advertised!

        So do my SiS's.

I think the major advantage of both your NVIDIA and my SiS setups is that they aren't based on VIA's chipsets
