  • Jumpy cutlist playback with MSP and AVI_IO

I've already sent this to Mr. Zingg, but just in case anyone here has the solution, here goes:

    I use a Marvel G200-TV (PD 5.55) on a PIII-550 Win98 machine with 128 MB RAM; AVI_IO version D 03.06.

I recently tried to put a 45-minute video out to tape using MSP's cutlist preview, but after a short while, the video would appear to pause and jump, both on the screen and on the video output. It looks pretty much like the playpack form of dropped frames, starting with a few spread jitters and increasing until the entire playback is staggered.

So I purchased AVI_IO to remedy the situation, since I was certain the problem was with memory handling. Sure enough, AVI_IO lengthened the time before the symptoms appeared, but they didn't go away. The program appeared completely oblivious to the problem, as I could see no changes in the status bar when the problem began.

I am playing several files, many above 1.5 GB, with some small files to use as fillers between segments. All are 704x480 29.97 fps, 44.1 kHz 16-bit stereo files generated with MSP 6.0. I have run AVI_IO after killing many background processes on a fresh boot, and will get several minutes into the video before symptoms appear (which is usually the third or fourth file, since the first two are short). AVI_IO's buffer indicator will hover around 20 on the left side of the slash, from 15 to 25, changing with every frame. The right side of the slash stays at 6 except for a few jumps every now and then. No dropped frames are reported and the frame counter never stalls.

    Someone seen this before?

Yes. I have sen this with my Matrox RRS and MSPRO6 when playing back from the time line. I have not found a solution for it and have gone back to using MSPRO5.2 which used it's own Matrox supplied cutlist.dll which gives the good playback. MSPRO6 uses it own version. I have not tried using AVI_IO for playback.

Coolness. I had considered doing that. Good thing I've still got MSP 5.2. Thanks!
