  • Opinions on the Sony DVD+RW DRU500?

I'm thinking on getting this unit....

    Mostly for datastorage....

But I might do some "real" dvd's ...
(It would be fun to give my sis a "birthdayDVD" with all her birthdays on )

    Any opinions on it?

      Hi,

I'm thinking about getting it as well. The specs look good, but I don't know how it will work in the real world. I'll be looking forward to the replies. Anyone hear how compatible it is? I think it is also called the dru500a. It is at bestbuy for 349$ us. Nunchal

I just picked this unit up- you have no idea how hard it was to find it!(everyone was out of stock-even Sony)

        Works great so far.
I have a DVD player that is VERY picky - won't play any vcd'd or svcd's recorded on cd-r's. I thought I would have to buy a new unit to play dvd-/+r's, but I was amazed that the first dvd I made with this unit (dvd+rw sample that came with device) played perfectly!
I subsequently purchaced cheap ($5.00 Cndn) verbatim dvd+r media that played just as well.
I have some dvd-r media, but haven't tried it yet.

Nothing negative to say about this unit!

DVD+R media is too expensive... DVD+R 1x discs around $5-6 CAD, and DVD+R 2x discs around $10... when DVD-R 2X is $2.20 CAD... no thanks, I'll take the Pioneer DVD-R burner and a seperate high speed CD-R burner anyday.

          Just my opinion,
          Andrew
nForce2 MX intergrated video is actually pretty darn good, but I do miss 16xFAA!?!? Way to go nVidia.

          AMD XP2500
          MSI nForce2
          Tons of RAM
          Tons of HD space

            check again- I got dvd+r 2.4X for 5.00 bucks cndn (10+units).
Also, this is the only recorder that does dvd+r and dvd-r at 4X (with the new firmware upgrade)

just a tip: if you do decide to get this, check the stores (best buy, circuit city, etc) starting the day after christmas, there's usually a pile of things that have been returned and are 10%+ off but still new. did that last year for my dvd player and ended up getting it for about 1/3 the price brand new.
