  • ATI8500DV DV Port compliance...

    Hi all...

This D****d forum is making me sick again with the incurable "Videoedit Fever"! ;-)

    Just have a question...

While I'm still investigating wether it's worth to try and have the Marvel G200 installed in WinXP (Thanks to anybody that commented on this in my previous post!), I may have the chance to buy an ATI/Hercules AIW 8500DV for a fair price...

Have read wonders (!) about this card, but just have a question...

Are the FireWire ports on the DV version of this card OHCI compliant???

Could not find any info on this subject... Oh! By the way... I know there are some MOBO incompatibilities, but eventual OHCI compliance comes first... (Anyway... ASUS CUSL-2 here...)...

If they aren't... I think I'll better follow Doc's and Brian's advice of avoid "embedded" things... (Brian... your comparison with your experience with your first drill back' in the 50s was exhilarating, but quite to the point!

Thanks everybody willing to share info!

    Ciao! Joe Daring, Italy

Back about six months ago when I was looking at one of these I found a great deal of complaint about the firewire ports on the AIW 8500 DV not functioning correctly, and ATI not acknowledging the problem. You've probably found out pretty much the same thing.

I tried the AIW 7500, which to me appeared to be more or less the same as the AIW 8500 DV, without the firewire. Unfortunately I couldn't get the video output to scale to my VCR/Monitor combo to my satisfaction so I sent it back. If DVD/VCD is your goal, You'll probably have better luck.

As for the onboard firewire, search all the AIW discussion forums you can find. That should give you an idea of whether the 8500 DV firewire problem has been addressed.

Odd that the ATI website wouldn't come right out and say whether the 8500 DV firewire ports are fully compliant. That alone would give me pause. Might have to drop an Email to ATI directly for that answer.

A great source for info on ATI AIW cards is Rage3D it is worth noting that future versions of the AIW series (8500 AIW & 9700Pro AIW) have not had firewire ports which seems to be ATI's solution to the firewire problem.
