  • What software to use?

I am new to video, so I have a few simple questions. I have an Asus A7V8X, XP 2000+, 512 DDR. This MB comes with on board firewire, and I have a JVC Mini DV camcorder. I want to transfer my home movies and burn it to a DVD-R. What software should I use to transfer to my HDD? Any other info would be greatly appreciated .

Depends on your level of video expertise.

For a begining editor VideoStudio6 is a good option as it's geared to the home videography market. You can add titles etc. before encoding for DVD.

If you're not interested in editing the video, as in just recording & burning without titles & the like, then DVD MovieFactory is a good choice as it can capture and burn in one program. Very basic editing features though.

If you want to hit the road running with a more professional package MediaStudio Pro 6.5 is the ticket now, but MediaStudio 7.0...a major power and feature boost....is due in March. MSPro 6.5 has a rudimentary DVD burning module while 7.0 will get something else.

Just note the post I have up about MPEG quality with the Ulead MPEG.now products (all their new stuff). I posted some files that significantly upgrade the MPEG quality in these products.

My opinion would be to bypass Videostudio and go straight to MediaStudio 6.x. I have tried VideoStudio and MediaStudio and found the interface for MediaStudio to be the most intuitive interface of ANY NLE software on the market. With little to no reading of the manual (Not recomended, that's just me.) I was editing clips.

Maybe I find MSP to be the most logically ordered software because I cut my teeth on it. Going to other packages always left me running back to Ol' familar.

You may want to also look at Vegas Video 3.0. I have some issues with the package in regards to moving paths and overlays. but for basic editing of scenes it has some unique features. I only recomend this from reading other posts about novices trying that package first and finding that piece of software the "logical" choice. If you are familar with Sonic Foundry's audio products you will find Vegas very similar.

One last suggestion: Stock up on coffee for those long nights of editing. That isn't to say that NLE is difficult. But it is one of the most engrossing hobbies I have ever tried. I can't begin to tell you how many nights I have thrown myself into a project, trying new ideas and such. It is the damndest thing to start on something at 7:00pm and the next thing you know, you are saying goodnight to the sunrise.

I second the suggestion to go directly to MSP 6.5. The "lite" Directors Cut edition may be all you need.

Vegas Video 3 has a WPA-like hardware locked activation scheme so I can't recommend it.

I find Video Studio much harder to use than MSP.

A lot of people are surprised when I disclose to them that my first NLE was Adobe Premiere... and not MediaStudio Pro.

I still recall what I was thinking when I first read comments and questions on the net about 'Ulead.'

At that time, I had never heard of the brand, Ulead, before so I didn't know what to think about it.

I had heard the brand name, Adobe, before so I decided I would purchase a Miro DC30+.

The Miro (now Pinnacle) card was bundled with Adobe Premiere.

I remember how utterly confusing Premiere seemed back then.

In addition, I had disastrous problems with the Miro card.

I wound up with a Matrox Rainbow Runner, which was bundled with MediaStudio Pro.

I was editing clips fairly quickly and it wasn't long before I knew my way around the NLE.

I was pleased by the short learning curve.

Of course, I'm a Ulead fan these days.

              My two cents,

After doing some initial testing this weekend I am going to suggest you take a look at ScenAnalyzer.

Head to http://www.scenalyzer.com/download.html to give the program a try.

It is one of the slickest capture/orgainizing DV programs I have run across.

When MediaStudio Pro 7.0 ships, you'll notice some extremely powerful enhancements to the ULEAD Video Capture program.

Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7.0 will simply have no equal... not even from Avid Xpress DV and not even from Apple Final Cut Pro.

                    It's true.

                    :-)

Key word here being "when". If this was something that would be available now, or in the next month I would wait. But March is too far off to put up with the present version's capture abilities.

I can't begin to tell you how envious I am of beta-testers. That is to say "Non-Paying" beta testers. In the strictest definition of the word we all are beta testers everytime Microsoft comes out with a new OS.

Beta'ing has its moments though; as in working into the wee hours on a problem only to find that it's some techno-weenies idea of a "feature"
