Actually...
...the release posted by Paul is *very* significant...
It reveals that Sony's new DVD camcorder division has selected DVD-RW and DVD-R and *NOT* DVD+R/+RW!!!
As for MPEG and editing...
...it *CAN* be done.
In fact, it's being done every day by the pros...
Ever heard of the Sony Betacam SX professional-level camera line?
Take a look at this PDF file format document from Sony about Betacam SX:
If you read it, you'll see that the top-of-the-line Sony Betacam SX
format records to MPEG-2.

"It adopts an MPEG-2 4:2:2 Profile@ML based compression algorithm to deliver the excellent picture quality of 8-bit, 4:2:2 digital recording at a bit rate optimized for higher robustness and lower running cost."
2. Hitachi now offers a pro DVD disc camera that records to MPEG-2:
3. Pinnacle offers a professional editing system called 'Liquid
Silver' that is 100% MPEG-2 in terms of its native format:

MediaStudio Pro 7.0 includes the new DVD-VR feature that makes the editing of DVD consumer MPEG content easier.
Sony's introduction is very significant in that Sony now joins Panasonic and Hitachi in offering DVD camcorders.
Panasonic just introduced a new model, the VDR-M30, as well:
