Matrox: RT.X100 & RT.X10 VfW capture drivers.....

Matrox has released Video for Windows capture drivers for the RT.X100 and RT.X10 realtime boards. These drivers enable analog capture of RGB, YUY2 or DV/DVCAM using software other than the Media Tools or Premiere and the use of video conferencing tools.

Among the software tested with the new drivers are;

- Sonic Foundry Vegas Video
- Microsoft NetMeeting
- NCT AVI_IO
- VirtualDub
- Ulead MediaStudio Pro (including MSPro 7)
- Ulead DVD Workshop
- Ulead DVD Movie Factory
- Yahoo Messenger
- Windows XP Movie Maker

I've found them useful in doing high quality keys using the RGB or YUY2 capture modes. DV keyers can deliver good quality, but in my experience troublesome sources require a higher quality source, which these drivers can provide.

Another interesting possibility these drivers allow is using programs like AVI_IO include capturing to DivX5, PICVideo MJPeg and other *.avi software capture codecs.

They should also work with VfW capture software with a timeshifting feature if you use a source with a tuner; TV's with analog outs, VCR's etc.

I feel the same way....some of us have been pushing for VfW drivers since the early days of the RT-2000

This doesn't mean you can use the RT.X100's realtime effects in these editing programs (well...the organic wipes you can). It does mean that you now have both analog and IEEE-1394 capture capability in them when you have an RT.X100 in the system.

This gets interesting with MSPro 7 because it can export using the Matrox DV/DVCAM codec to type2, which means you can add a lot of the new video filters (Lightning, Spotlights, Lens Flare, Clouds, etc. etc.) to a source then, export to the RT.X100's codec and use the result in realtime in Premiere.

works great so far in msp6.5 with rtx10 capturing with msp6.5 mpeg1 and mpeg2 (initial tests), however some apps like dvd workshop and sonic mydvd, will not recognize the rtx as a capture device.

I don't have any problem with DVD Workshop 1.3.

In the Capture page first make sure the "Matrox Video Capture Device" in Global Settings is the active one.

Also in Global Settings select the "Change Capture Plug-in" menu and choose the Ulead VFW Plugin.

From the "Capture Settings" menu select the Source (composite or S-Video) and Format you want then set up the audio and you should be in business.

Why does Matrox stick to VfW, while the rest of the world has gone to WDM? Is this a quality issue? I mean, can one capture better quality video with VfW?
I found out that I can use AVI_IO to capture with my new Terratec Cinergy card, which is WDM driver based. So it looks like VfW hardware ain´t compatible with WDM software but VfW software does work with WDM hardware...

Ulead, AVI_IO and some other products can access either DS/WDM or VfW but not all others can. Using VfW just makes the capture interface available from a wider variety of programs.
