  • DV capture : optimal settings ?

    Hello,

A friend of mine is experiencing dropped frames when capturing from his Sony DV camera to his Dell (don't know which model, it is a PIV with a Dell firewire card). The dropped frames occur when a lot is changing in the image (e.g. panning).

Is there some resource for the optimal settings for a computer mainly used for this purpose ?
(I'm thinking PCI Latency values, write back cache, ... - perhaps some others I don't know about)

His system is equiped with a single harddrive (Western Digital, 80 GB), could this be one of the reasons ? Or could it be due to the Firewire card ? (if the latter, I would advise him to go for Canopus, Matrox, Pinnacle - Canopus and Pinnacle both have a relatively cheap firewire capture card)

    Thanks !

Two drives is better, but what is going on in the video shouldn't matter for DV as its a constant 3.6 MB/s stream.

What OS? What does device manager say about the firewire card?

One else is hooked up to this system?

      Sorry for the late reply...

The OS is Windows XP home edition. Other hardware is a networkcard (but the computer is not on a network) and a modem. I'm not sure if he has a soundcard; I think he is using the mainboard audio.
(then of course, DVD-drive and CDRW; both on the second channel)

The device manager gives no errors or warnings.
