Can VirtualDub output YUY2 to HuffYUV?

Can VirtualDub be configured to send YUY2 data to HuffYUV for recompress. It seems like it's sending some other format. My source clips (compressed with HuffYUV) have data rates around 8MB/sec, and the output from VirtualDub run through HuffYUV is running around 19MB/sec.

kefoo: VirtualDub processes (almost exclusivley) in RGB format which HuffYUV does not compress as well. You can configure HuffYUV to convert that RGB data into YUY2 (at a slight loss in color precision). Though if you don't need to do any actual processing in VirtualDub, you can set the video to "Fast Recompress" which will keep the data in native YUY2.

I've never seen HuffYUV's RGB->YUY conversion option make much visible difference in the video quality (probably partially due to the fact that the video source is YUY anyhow). I'd not spend the 2x or greater drive space requirement on RGB, although that's really dependent on how much free drive space you have (for me, processing HuffYUV'd YUY video is faster than processing the HuffYUV'd RGB video, simple because of drive speed requirements).

kefoo: I have to agree with Eric VanHeest. The RGB->YUV option in HuffYUV is about the least lossy option known to man, and it usually yields even better compression than you got in the original. Also, you want to just look into using frame server to output the video straight into whatever final program you want to which avoids the RGB-YUV step.

I tried the frame server, but Premiere, MediaStudio, and bbMPEG all refused to open the VDR file. I'm running on Win2K, if it makes any difference. Have you gotten it to work with any of these programs? Thank you.

What format are you trying to compress to? If it is MPEG try TMPGEnc. It likes the .vdr from VD 1.4. The quality is also excellent.

For some programs (like LSX), I had to name the file whatever.avi instead of whatever.vdr (VirtualDub doesn't care what you name the file, it just suggests .VDR). Also make sure you've installed the FrameClient support DLLs from VirtualDub's setup.exe, if necessary.
