  • Windows hardware rant - need help

    hello all,

I'm thinking again about tweaking. Currently running ECS k7s5a w/duron 1.1Ghz and 256 DDR and considering Soyo SY-KT333 w/XP 2000+ combo for $129. I have been unable to acheive the elusive "0" dropped frames on the Mill G400 DH 32Mb, but not much of a windows tweaker, software bad.

I love the card, my first and only PC recording card, and have tried to build a few systems around it, swapping it in/out of different configs, but I can't seem to get things just right. I actually had luck with my first self build system, thanks much to this forum, based on abit' be-6 r2 and aureal vortex BA(bad ass) sound but never acheived the mythological "0" dropped frames. I've come close with the ECS/ Duron combo and on board sound, put the aureal card in the wife's rebuild of the abit, but still can't seem to get everything jiving.

I had been running 512 Mb PC133 with the ECS/Duron combo and still getting frame drops repeatedly at about 1/1000 or worse. Switched up to 256Mb DDR for memory to begin the slow process, money-wise, of building the next level up.

Should I go for door #1 and the ECS K7s5a/XP 2000+ for $99 or the Soyo sy-kt300/XP 2000+ for $129 behind door #2?

The windows reference was regarding the fact that windows seems to have to handle sooo many different hardware compatibilities or lack of, and Apple has the luxury of dictating hardware demands. Should I buy an IMac? or go for door #2 ?

    Help me out

I'd opt for door #3, the Asus A7S333, or door 4, the MSI SIS 745 Ultra (266 MHz Memory bus--slightly slower but who's counting?).

Both have the SIS 745 chipset and I'd select either over the K7S5A or the Soyo, especially with that VIA chipset.

You don't mention what you use for editing. If you use MediaStudio Pro and money is no limit, I'd go for door #5, a P4 HT 3.06 GHz system with an 845PE chipset and a PC2700 memory (wish I could afford it, myself ). This will work with MSPro 7 like you've never seen anything. I'm told the best m/b available for this may be the Intel D845PEBT2 or the MSI 845PMaxMS-6580 v2.

        Hi
As an "aside" before You go for the Asus A7S333, check the Asus motherboard forums.
I got one to use with My RT2500, & it wouldn`t even boot up.
I checked the forum, & it appears that not even booting is a common fault!!! The problem I have is the Matrox validated motherboard list is well out of date & I have to go by recommendations.
I have just exchanged the Asus for a Soltek SL75DRV5-C, to try.
BTW< the supplier tested the board & said the 12volt on the board was down & fans wouldn`t turn, I had the power led lit & the fans turning!

        Best Wishes..

        Peter..........

What are you using to capture? I had frame drop problems under W2k / XP on various motherboards including known good intel chipsets. Capturing fullsize PAL was an impossibility for me... until I decided to set the capture program at realtime priority. Now I can grab using AVI_IO / VirtualDubMod (sync mode 1) and only get audio / video sync drops (1 in 30000 for most channels here) or VritualDubMod (sync mode 2) for 0 drops.

There are command line priority changers such as the cmd line version of prcview that can do it nicely.

The only capture card I've used is Mill g400 32Mb DH. I'm definitely a low budget builder. I run Win89 or 98SE depending on which I have more luck with. I have an 80Gb IBM HD dedicated for capture. I use purchased version of AVI_IO to capture w/huffyuv and just purchased PicVideo better compression, smaller file size, to hopefully improve my drop rate.
I figure the move up to Athlon from Duron on 1 of the afore mentioned combos should get me there.
I'll probably go with the ECS. I just wanted to know of bad luck with the boards I mentioned, or any hints about better recording.

              Thanks

*SOME* have reported the ECS spontaneously resetting its BIOS to defaults. I've seen it myself, in the one and only K7S5A I've experimented with. Whether its a battery issue or a BIOS issue, or symtomatic of something more serious, I don't know. Although its more of an annoyance than anything else, it rattled me enough not to recommend the board until ECS acknowledges the issue and does something about it.

(*SOME* have reported that a specific BIOS upgrade fixes the problem. Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to test this.)

I've heard of some other issues also, but none firsthand so I can't comment.
