Capturing black bars from DV 16:9?

How do I do this? The signal is sent out to the RR-S stretched and without letterboxing. My final output is going to be VHS and the other camera that is being used is a Hi8. Its black bars show up in 16:9 when captured through the RR-S, I assume because it's an analog signal i.e. the bars are part of the signal. Whereas the bars on the DV signal are merely "placeholders" that are not taken into consideration, as the signal is a true 16:9 format for playing through a widescreen TV. But I want the bars. How do I get them without going through a FireWire?
