          Well, never seen a D8 picture, so I am not debating that. But to tape speeds: Because the DV tape is, as said superior to Hi8 tape, D8 [i]requires[i] the tape speed to be higher. With a lower quality tape you have to have bigger space for every bit. Also, as the Hi8 tape is wider, the "real" tape speed between the tape and the rotating video head is also higher, so there is more space for each bit also in that direction.

          Just by looking at the numbers you can not say which approach brings better results.

          And yes, ME tapes are essential fo DV format tapes... maybe Canon thinks D8 is "impractical". At least I do...
