  • hardware MJPEG in WinXP on RRG

I've installed the 2.10 VT with MV and RRG/MJPEG hack as described in this thread:

and now I can capture MJPEG in AVI_IO and other VfW capture apps without a problem. HW MJPEG playback also works through mediaplayer 6.4, but will cause lots of problems if I try it through sasami2k... fair 'nough.

Now, what I was surprised by is that when I capture to HW MJPEG on the RRG at full res PAL with highest quality MJPEG setting (~3 MBps), I get about 60% cpu utilisation on my Celeron2 @~500 MHz. Virtualdub and Matrox VCR even use close to 100% and drop frames.

Is this normal behaviour for the RRG with the hacked VTs in Win2k/XP ? My hdd runs in DMA mode, and the Matrox HDBench says that I get close to 20MBps throughput.

Could it be related to the YUY2 bug on the RRG boards which prevent this colourspace from being used in Win2k/XP? Could it perhaps do some sort of colour space conversion in software to work around this bug? I thought that the HW MJPEG would use much less CPU, as it was advertised to go with Pentium1 166 MHz PCs.

I'm not blaming Matrox or anything, since I know that XP is an unsupported OS for HW MJPEG, I'm just curious what might be the cause of the high CPU usage when capturing and if it's possible to resolve it.

BTW. when I play back through hardware MJPEG, DVD-MAX isn't used for some reason (driver limitation?), neither is it used when I tune the TV channels in Matrox VCR.

PPS. I use a SBLive! for the sound capturing, but that one doesn't use much CPU time when capturing, right??? at most a lot of PCI bandwidth, but this i815 system doesn't seem to have problem with that.
