  • I am a confirmed software junkie, just bought Vegas Video 4.0. Not sure why!

I have and use infrequently Vegas Audio 2.0. I just received and upgrade offer from Sonic Foundry for Vegas Video 4.0. I know SF is not in great financial shape but for some reason I had to have VV4.

Anyone using this program? Does it have any advantages over MS Pro?

I guess I bought it primarily for the audio features.

I wouldn't personally buy Vegas as a long term software investment.

Sonic Foundry is in the midst of a fire sale to stay alive, financially.

Sonic is selling its entire Media Services division to raise badly needed cash.

On the bright side, Madison, Wisconsin's CAPITAL TIMES newspaper is reporting that Sonic Foundry's sale of its Media Services division will not result in layoffs in the company's home town of Madison, Wisconsin.

    But on the not-so-bright side:

"The sale, expected to close in March, would affect 90 employees at Sonic Foundry's Santa Monica, Calif., and Toronto offices."

In addition, the newspaper reports the sell-off may *NOT* be over.

    Quote:

"...the sell-off may not be over."

"Buinevicius (Sonic Foundry CEO) said about five big firms have expressed interest in buying Sonic's SOFTWARE BUSINESS."

"Right now, we're dealing with probably five different types of scenarios, depending on who's talking and who's interested," Buinevicius said. "If it makes sense, obviously it's our fiduciary responsibility to do it."

So you may have Vegas 4.0.

But the bottom line is Sonic Foundry **may** not have it six months from now.

That's why I'm not so sure it's a very smart investment for the long term.

If it's something one is just curious about for the short term... great.

I liked VV3, which I used for a time until the MSP6.52 MPEG VBR encoding issue was fixed. There is a lot to like and a few things that annoy -- like MSP or Premiere. I happen to prefer MSP for the way I like to work. YMMV.

I will not be buying VV4 because of their WPA like hardware locked activation scheme.

I still keep VV3 on my system for a few things. One of the cool things that Vegas has is a filter that allows for film, old-film, old-video, etc. effects that are really slick and easy to use! Heck, you can even edit the amount of scratches you want!

There are some other items that make Vegas a keeper on my system, but the film-effects is the main one.

It is a shame that the motion path tool is so lousy. Couple that with their "call us to (re)install what you already paid for" and I will have to sit back and see how things shake out in the future.
Perspective cannot be taught. It must be learned.

MSP7 has an old film filter. Don't know how it compares with others, You can choose the degree of scratches, dust, light "flashes" and jumps with it.
