Ok I am currently running Win2k and love it, only problem is that I want to do some video editing with my PCTV pci and none of the video editing software that came with it works with win2k so I have decided to dual boot. Now out of win95C, win98FE and Win98SE (im not even considering WinME) is the fastest for video editing? Some people have told me that win95C has the fastest DMA and memory transfers, and some people have told me Win98FE is much faster than Win98SE. So whats the scoop?

I'm currently running Win 98 FE and it is loads more stable than win 95 ever was. I haven't tried Win 98 SE but I have "heard" of annoying bugs like programs not shutting down properly and the system hanging during shutdown. Don't take my word for this however, I've gotten this info second hand, and there are any number of fixes and workarounds for any glitches you encounter.

As for Win 95, I was initially reluctant to upgrade to Win 98 but now there's no way I'd go back. I still have programs lock up once in a while, but the ever-threatening "blue screen of death" seems to be a thing of the past.

    FWIW...

FWIW, I use 98SE for this kind of work. It is essential for some things in MSP 6, I believe. However, like all MS offerings, it certainly is not glitch-free (I've heard the W2k + SP1 has got only about 4750 bugs in it, catalogued so far, compared to over 8000 for all versions of 98). IMHO, you are very wise not to go to ME until at least a year is up and SP1 stabilised.

      Viva Linux !!!

When comparing the speed, reliability and operation of W9x OS:s, the W95B is still the best, it does need some updates and tweaking, but when you get those done, it is still the best OS that MicroS**t has released.

Unfortunately, the newer device drivers and programs might not support it any more, in which case the W98SE is the best choice.
The W98SE can be stripped and tweaked to pretty good, but it is still nowhere close to W95B (The King )

If I'm not mistaking, Win95 will only support hard drives or partitions < 32 gb. It's only hearsay though. I use win98 SE.
Resistance is futile - Microborg will assimilate you.

            Flying dutchman,

There are lots of "Facts" flying around the net about non-supported features in W95B, so far I have not come across one important feature that wasn't.

There are some that are not supported in the retail version (the very first W95, W95A or OSR1), but the W95B (aka OSR2) is a different beast altogether.

Ok so what is the final answer? win95B or Win98SE?

Of the two, Win 98 SE with the custom install options stripped to the bare minimum for multimedia support would be the way to go. That should provide the most up-to-date resources with the least amount of hassle.
Brian: I'm in complete agreement regarding Win Me. Definitely wait a year for the bugs to work their way to the surface.
(But with Microshaft working toward a yearly OS release schedule, a new version with all new bugs will always be ready to cause pain and agony for generations of users yet unborn...)

                  PR-man,

If all your devices and programs are supported under W95B, it will be the better choice.

It seems that MicroS**t is not interested in fixing the OS bugs in W98/W98SE, probably because there are so many security issues with IE4+ and the different Outlooks, that they have no resources to fix the actual OS (NO, IE is not the OS !! )

The main advantage to Win95B/OSR2 was that FAT32 delivers higher performance than with later releases. This may have been a big deal two years ago, but drive performance has increased almost geometrically in the last couple of years, negating a lot of that advantage.

Given that it's been very stable for me I'm sticking with Win98SE until Win2K gets over its current state of "driver neuropathy"

Pick your poison. I'm using W95 OSR2 (Suffix c?) on one machine, and W98SE on the second. Both work OK, I've used Marvel G200 and 400 with both.

Currently the machine I'm using the most for capture/editing (a lowly PII 266) is on W98SE and has the G200 Marvel and an ADS Pyro installed. I've been running VideoStudio 4 and VideoWaveIII on this machine, and apart from an occasional unexplained lockup (using Word97, PSP4 and VWIII simultaneously), haven't had any problems.
